Manchester Picadilly
I don't suppose anyone knows if Manchester Picadilly has ticket barriers ? It would be useful to know

Re: Manchester Picadilly
I havn't been there but i'm pretty sure it does from when I was looking how to get somewhere via there once
I'd just go with the guess they do have them.

Re: Manchester Picadilly
they have manual checks - you need to buy a platform ticket to take photos on the platforms.

Re: Manchester Picadilly
Thanks guys. It wasn't for photo's, it was merely that my uni budget isn't too kind at the moment, and i was weighing up the thought of trying to get from Birmingham New Street to Manchester Picadilly without the correct ticket ?
Re: Manchester Picadilly
Good luck getting past the grippers on the train then. Just buy a ticket or get a bus.

Re: Manchester Picadilly
It isn't something I normally do. I was thinking of possibly buying a ticket from BNS to Stafford, and then hoping the ticket would be checked on the train before then, and then staying on to MP.

I believe its called theft. You disgust me.

Fair enough. To be honest, it was my brother's idea and I was just seeing how high the risk was.

If your lucky you would only get charged another single between Stafford and MP, worst case scenario the BTP get involved.

Never do this, the one time you try and get away with it you will get caught, and I believe that in such a situation the standard procedure is to charge you the full walk on 'anytime' single fare to your destination, which is probably something like £437. Also if you were to get prosecuted for such a thing, don't expect your Uni Senate to take a positive view.
Re: Manchester Picadilly
You're an idiot to even consider it.

Believe it's actually twice the walk on fare or a pre-set amount, whichever is greater.Kevo00 wrote:Never do this, the one time you try and get away with it you will get caught, and I believe that in such a situation the standard procedure is to charge you the full walk on 'anytime' single fare to your destination, which is probably something like £437
Apparently if you are a regular user of the Paris Metro you end up paying less money by jumping the barriers and getting caught every now and then and being fined than if you buy tickets. That philosophy will NOT work on the British Rail network where revenue protection is heavily enforced, particularily on long distance routes.
Re: Manchester Picadilly
If you live in Switserland you can always consider a BritRail ticket

Not on Virgin or XC - not penalty fare operators.Ameecher wrote:Believe it's actually twice the walk on fare or a pre-set amount, whichever is greater.
It's a standard open single to your destination - which isn't cheap for Brum-Man (£150+?)

Re: Manchester Picadilly
Well that's opened my eyes. I thought the fine for being caught without a ticket was just the cost of the fare anyway, especially if you plead stupidity. That aside, the ploy of pretending to be asleep when the ticket officer walks past on the train does work annoyingly well, but I know the one time you try it without a ticket, it won't. Looks like I'll just pay the fare...

I've only ever twice "fare evaded", and neither of them was intentionally or for my own profit. when I was young...
Well actually not that long ago, but I have a go-card you see and I neglected to inform my parents of it's dire balance before it went negative. It actually took me 2 days before I remembered to get $20 off of my parents

So yup that's my story, A fare evasion of a total of AU$1.92

Again, not on Virgin or XC - they'll just stand there and shout at you until you wake up.jake.grimshaw wrote:That aside, the ploy of pretending to be asleep when the ticket officer walks past on the train does work annoyingly well

Well, on my XC from Taunton to Birmingham last night they didn't wake me up, but it normally depends on how busy the train/carriage is.

Re: Manchester Picadilly
I'm afraid to say that that is a very silly thing to do. But Ticket Inspectors can sometimes not check tickets or 'miss' you if you sit there looking out the window or look like you have been settled for a while, i've never travelled without a ticket (except once and that was a 5 minute one - stop) but the ticket inspectors can sometimes be a bit blind, especially at peak times!
