Problem connecting to the forum

Post by Tattoo »

I've been having problems connecting to here thru Opera. I use version 9.27 cuz I don't like the new version. I had no problem with XP. Does anyone have any idea why I have problems connecting to here with it? Everything was fine for a while with Vista Home Premium but I just reinstalled and used Windows 7 now and again I can't connect thru Opera now. It wouldn't connect before with Vista but I don't know what I did to get it to connect. Anyone have an idea why? Thanks...

With all due respect, you're using a beta operating system and suffering what screams of a software problem. The whole reason people beta test is to find these problems and report them to the developers (in your case, Micro$oft). I recommend you take the report there and only ask here again once you're running the release version of W7.

Assuming you're using the beta, that is! I do believe people have the full RTM version running now. I've had no problems browsing from Windows 7 / Firefox, but I haven't installed Opera on this PC yet so I can't help I'm afraid. Can you connect to other websites? Perhaps the older version of Opera just doesn't like the newer version of Windows.

Do you get any particular sort of error message? Can you get to http://95.211.11.17/? Can you go to a command prompt, type "ping www.tt-forums.net", and does that work?

No, I don't get any error message at all. It just sits there. If one would pop up, I probably don't wait long enough to see it. But I'll try it right now and see. The link with numbers work but not the the other one. Thanks. I don't think that this is a problem in only Windows 7 because this happened with XP and Vista too. I just don't know what I did to get it working before. But as Xander said, it's still beta so that might be why. When I can buy it I'll know for sure if the reason is beta or not. But this is the only place I can't connect to.

EDIT: I do have the Windows 7 Ultimate RTM installed.

EDIT 2: I waited and I just get the regular message that pops up which says this;

You tried to access the address http://www.tt-forums.net,/ which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the Web address (URL) is correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the page.

EDIT 3' This what I get when I ping it.

According to what you typed just there, there's a comma in the address, which there shouldn't be. Are you sure you typed it in correctly?

The comma is just in the message. I copied it properly. Now, even with the numbers I'm having trouble now, which I remember hppened before, kinda. I was able to get in but after a minute or 2 it would stop working. Now when I log in I get this message:

You tried to access the address http://www.tt-forums.net/posting.php?mo ... 21&t=44711, which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the Web address (URL) is correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the page.

EDIT: that's not showing the whole error message. Here's a screeny..

Most of that message in opera normally is a reflection that the system has been unable to access the internet in general, as for the spelling error I had to deliberately dummy my system by mispelling the address for the white house to get it to bring that message up, I even tried mispelling this as http://www.tt-forums, net and it still brought up the page correctly.
Going to be really dumb have you cleaned up your keyboard recently? or did you clean it up and not use a compressed air cleaner?

How can you even think that my keys are sticking? I don't understand. I said that I can connect everywhere but here. I have full access to the internet except when I connect to here. It has nothing to do with sticky keys or anything misspelled. Like I said, I don't know how that got there cuz I highlighted the url and copied and pasted it in Opera. So I'm wondering how you can even think that my keys are sticking. BTW, my computer is less than 2months old and they should not be sticky in 2 months. Thanks for the suggestion tho. I have yet to figure it out. I can connect and log-in thru IE but can only connect with http://95.211.11.17 thru Opera. When I try to log-in it freezes. That's sucks cuz I don't like IE. I like the features in Opera more and use it most of the time except I have to use it to access my hotmail account...

Do you have some sort of half-baked implementation of IPv6 on your computer, which means Opera is trying to connect via IPv6 and failing, perhaps? If you go into the properties for your network connection settings, is IPv6 enabled? You may want to try disabling it in that case.

IPv6 is the only thing I can think of that would cause this forum to not work and others to work fine. Try going to http://ipv6.google.com/ or http://vps.jontysewell.net/phpsysinfo and see if the same thing happens. (google is IPv6-only there, whereas my VPS has both just like the forums and will show either the v4 or v6 IP in the header.)

Yes, orudge, that is in my network. It goes in there automatically when I installed Windows 7 and it was there when I had Vista installed. I don't remember if it was in my nieces' computer that had XP installed. Here is a screenshot of the adapters installed.

jonty-comp, I tried both links. This link, http://ipv6.google.com/, in both IE & Opera, I could not connect. This link, http://vps.jontysewell.net/, in Opera, I can't connect but in IE I got redirected to here. http://vps.jontysewell.net/phpsysinfo/i ... sp=dynamic

Should I just uninstall them or do I need to do it in a certain way?

Thank you both for your help with this. I've been pulling my hair out on this one with no progress.

Well you don't seem to be using the IPv6 for anything that isn't already on v4, and it looks like you aren't getting a v6 service from your ISP, so you should be able to untick the "Internet Protocol Version 6" entry in that window you posted, reboot the computer (for good measure, you should normally just disconnect and reconnect) and try again.

Opera seems a bit wobbly in IPv6 territory, whereas IE usually has the good grace to realise the v6 isn't working out and switch over to v4.

It does sound like Opera is being silly when it comes to IPv6, and is not failing gracefully. Assuming there's no option within Opera itself to disable IPv6, I guess disabling it in the connection properties window would be the next best thing.

I unchecked both of them and still can't log-in thru Opera. So I guess I'll just have to use IE from now on and get used to it. Thank you for your help with this. I might try to upgrade it again and see if I can get used to it. I've updated Opera before but didn't like the newer version. That's why I use version 9.27. Atleast I can still acess this place thru IE. Thanks again and keep up the good work you all are doing to make Locomotion more fun to play with all the US trains I get from here...

I'm having a similar problem with opera. Internet Explorer display the forum page with no problems but with opera it looks like this... anybody got any idea what might have caused this?

Looks like it's not picking up the CSS Style Sheet correctly. Try doing a hard refresh, which means holding down Shift and F5 (Refresh Key). That should load the page from absolute scratch and it should display fine then :)
