What do you think of my world?

Hi people,

I used to play Transport Tycoon Deluxe when I was young on my Pentium I Windows 95 (:D) computer.
I tried to play it again on my recent (Windows Vista) computer, but it didn't work.
But then I found OpenTTD!!!! :D:D:D
I must say you did an amazing job copying TTD and especially adding new functions without disturbing the original game too much!

I downloaded and installed it a few days ago and I am already addicted to it
Right now, I've got a world with €5,1 billion on my bank account.
Also, I am still making a profit of 80 million a year when I spend 100 million on buying new vehicles that same year!

Furthermore I have got four big railways (maglev) running from and to the four corners of the map (which is 512x512 by the way). All these four tracks are four lanes (two lanes one way) with the inner lanes having regular stops. The other two only run from start to end.

Here is a screenshot (note that I turned on the automatic renewall option in the year 2159, which is why I lost over a billion € on new vehicles!):


I also just read all the stuff about the railway signs and making efficient crossing and stations.
What do you think of this crossing?

You posted in the wrong forum. But don't worry, all the newbs (those who are new to the forums) do that.

The junction is bad, mainly because of all the 2x45 and 90 degree turns. Use some more space, and use longer turns. Trains are slowed down by sharp turns.

First thing I note when looking at your overview screenshot: you build big dams or valley in order to get straight tracks where in a lot of places neither a slope nor a diagonal track would hurt - thus you waste huge amounts of money on unneeded terraforming.

Concerning the junction: it wouldn't work with the settings I play where a train cannot travel a 90° turn which you emply A LOT. Even if I'd enable it, it would be terribly slow with all those 2 * 45° turns in there. You might want to have a look at the wikis (openttd and openttdcoop) in my signature on building efficient hubs.

Lol, my trains are allowed to make 90 degree turns, so for me it doesn't matter. And indeed, I like to make huge dams, because then the trains can go faster.

Anyway, to answer you question; you should've posted it in the screenshots section in the Transport Tycoon section (note that it doesn't read OpenTTD) where all TTD related screenshots go.

You also use very long bridges. The fastest bridge in the game allows to travel over it with a speed of 611 km/h, the fastest maglev travels at 643 km/h. Another Self-PWND...

If you enable "realistic acceleration" for trains in the advanced options menu, inclines don't slow down trains all that much. Tight turns will though, so the junction you posted will become very inefficient. Why not try a simple cloverleaf? It's the easiest junction to build, and will hold its own until traffic becomes very heavy.

Here's an an embarassing story: when I first got this game in '94, I saw the speed limits on bridges and assumed that all trains would travel at that speed - so unnecessarily built bridges! I was rather young then, but am glad that I am not the only misguided fool on these forums...

Hehe nice to see that it's more people here that don't care that much about realism, I'm also a big fan of 90 and 180 degree turns.

Seems like we're using the same strategy for building crossnings.

There's a screenshot of one of my crossning that took me the longest time to build and the map from the same savegame that I really spent too much time on.

You have the right ideas, but like was said earlier try and avoid the sharp turns, they will slow your trains down.

I don't see anything wrong in doing a square world. To be honest I was impressed. Maybe the goal wasn't to optimize train speed.

I've looked several times on the speed meter of trains doing 90 degree turns and they don't loose a single km/h when realistic train speeds are turned off.

I'm not playing OpenTTD for the realistic feeling. I don't have to seat infront of my computer to experience realism, I get it everyday when i take the train to my work.

I love to build train systems that can with very little tracks run huge numbers of trains, If I want to build a junction for 16-tracks (or even 24-tracks which one junction in the savegame have) there will be very few places then enough space are available to build one without sharp turns.

In that case your junctions are excellent! It's the kick you get out of building them that counts.

That's true, but it counts for Nuff, I think Japzer can better use a Cloverleaf or a Roundabout, or whatever is usefull in you're track.
