Running a server
Hi guys, im new here. I have been playing transport tycoon for years, and have also been playing openttd for ages, however I have never played the game online.
I have set up a server to try it out, and I seem to have got it working. But there are still a few things I would like to know.
How do you set goals? How do you have winners? How can I display the rules im playing to? How do I make it so the game is just an eternal sandbox with no winner?
What is the console exactly?
Any information you could give me about the online aspects of the game that are not easy to find on the wiki page please let me know. Thanks.

Re: Running a server
At the moment, all OTTD multiplayer games are a sandbox. Players can agree on a goal, but it is not enforced by the game.
The console appears when you hit the '`' key (to the left of '1'), type "help" into it to get started.

Re: Running a server
There are few goal servers. They usually last 30min-2hours, and they get restarted when goal is finnished and winner revealed. Also they keep statics about winners etc.

Re: Running a server
Yes, but they are patched servers, you can't do that with an unmodified game.

Re: Running a server
Yes you can. There are few/several 0.7 stable servers which use this goal system.

Re: Running a server
They may say they are 0.7, that doesn't mean they aren't patched.

Test yourself then. Join example:
! Experts Hard - Free 0.7 !
! Experts Hard - Goal 0.7 !
! Experts Hard - Goal 0.7 ! "2 /Newgrf/ !
! Goal Server ! Hard
......
......
It's not about a game version, they all are same, and all of them are 7.0 stable, and everyone can play in those with openttd 0.7 stable.
Please, next time test yourself before start argument with it

Re: Running a server
Even though you can join those servers with a default 0.7.0 - the servers most probably are patched as they exhibit certain behaviour which is not incorporated in 0.7.0 and Conditional Zentith is right with his statement. So... check yourself next time before you start an argument with ittaisteluorava wrote:Test yourself then. Join example:

Yeah, but my point was, there are severals goal server's, which can be played with 0.7.0 stable. Just join to them when want to beat some other players.

Re: Running a server
Yes, and my point was that those servers are not 0.7.0 stable. They are labeled as 0.7.0 stable, and compatible with the 0.7.0 client, but that does not mean they are 0.7.0 stable. And this topic is about running servers, not running clients, so the relevant issues in this topic are whether the server is modified or not.
Having said all that, I am slightly curious as to what the server does when the goal is reached, and what you can actually get an unmodified client to do when that happens.

Re: Running a server
pause the game, change the end_game_year, setting and wait for 1. jan of that date, and a month later restart the game ^^
