Mars Heightmap

Post by jspaces »

In the latest svn r15778 download content, a mars map was one of the selections. The map unfortunately is based on http://www.solarviews.com/browse/mgs/mgstopo2.jpg which has shadows which is not usually wanted in a heightmap. I found a heightmap searching with Google at http://rebel13.com/SimCity/mars.jpg which needed a slight size adjustment. I have attached a resized heightmap with the resolution size of 2048 x 1024 (also the recommended size for OpenTTD). It looks much better in the game than the one in svn r15778 download content. Although I appreciate the individual/s who placed it there for the idea . Happy trails on mars ... :D

Yes, there are many height maps around. But the one posted here was grabbed off the site without any attributions or license information available (at least I didn't find any). I won't upload warez or content of dubious origin to bananas.

That said, I'm aware of the shortcomings of the map I uploaded. Most importantly it needs conversion from the used colour palette to a gray-scale version where pixel value reflects height. A map size of 512 x 1024 pixels is IMO way sufficient as interpolation for larger map sizes doesn't hurt.

EDIT: you also give the wrong source of the image. The correct link to the original is linked from the bananas website - which happens to have no shadowing - just a palette which may look like in the case of the tharsis mountains.
