OpenTTD Files (Suse)

Post by PriestLizard »

Hi there.

This is my first post so I'd like to say 'Hello' to everyone. ;) OpenTTD is a great project, kudos for all the devs!! :)

I already searched for this but I didn't find anything -- so I guess its OK to start a new thread. I installed OpenTTD 0.5.3. with Yast2 (Open Suse 11.0) and now I'd like to install this US train set modification. It says I have to create a new folder "newgrf" in my "openttd directory". My problem is however, that I cannot find this directory! I checked Yast2 and it seems that the files for OpenTTD are seperated in different folders. So how to I install this train set?

Also I wonder how I can enable the music? Like I said I installed it from OpenSuse (retail version btw) and I never purchased "original TTD" --- what can I do?

Thanks for your help in advance... see you later... :)

I think OTTD needs some files (such as the music files) from the original game. They're not in the download for copyright reasons.

As for your main question: there should be a directory called "data" in the directory you installed OTTD to. Simply copy any grfs you'd like there, and you should be able to find them through "newGRF settings" in the main menu.

You should definitely update your OpenTTD. Just get the latest version from the OpenTTD website or sourceforge. Latest stable is 0.6.3.

The user-specific data directory is ~/.openttd/data under Linux. The global one may depend on distribution. On (K)Ubuntu, which I am using, it is /usr/share/games/openttd/data.

The data directory is where you create the newgrf directory. You can either put the NewGRF directly into this directory or even create a complete sub tree (e.g. by unpacking the OpenTTDCoop pack into it).

The music files need to be in ~/.openttd/gm/ or /usr/share/games/openttd/gm/, i.e. not below the data directory (which I did wrong first, too).

As the others suggested, you should download OpenTTD 0.6.3 or even a Nightly to enjoy a lot more features and less bugs.
