Bizarre. But then one of my friends (also very attractive, as well as clever and popular) tried a similar thing when she got depressed over a failed relationship. I am lucky she is still with us.

Depression is clearly a terrible thing, something I can't get my head round. Selfishly, I hope it stays that way, as I doubt one could ever understand it until they have suffered from it.

I would vouch for that wholeheartedly. Too many people try to understand and fail miserably.

I heard about it a little while ago, I was a little shocked.

Everyone seems to think of Journalists as heartless b******/bitches who only live to make others' lives a living hell. I hope you've all learned from Charmaine's story.

Suicide...

Nearly committed suicide a few years ago myself. :(
At that moment, the pain was so intense, ripping me apart... before that evening I never quite understood that emotional pain could get physical and be so overwhelming. Sure, I read about it. I knew it is a possibility. But understanding? Who can when you haven't gone through it? It isn't pretty, and when you're suffering like that, you'll do anything to escape from it... to a lot more people as you may think that includes taking their own life.

How I survived? I didn't get past my self preservation instinct, but that journalist did.

Now, I don't want to say that her emotional pain got physical, but her pain sure was big enough to warrant suicide to her.

Depression is an actual disease, some people don't think of it that way, but it is. I know someone who has depression, and it is horrible how much physical pain they go through. It's not "just in your head."

But @ Expresso, we're all thankful you didn't!

Hear Hear!

Many people just try and get people to shrug off depression and its one of the most misunderstood and misinterpreted illnesses. People who have depression should be given the help they deserve instead of being put down as some of them do. Hopefully is they do get the help then things like this won't happen.

It also shows that celebrities/well known people are human after all.

It's technically a disorder... As defined in the ICD-10.

Thank you Mr. Politically Correct.
It doesn't really matter, it can still kill you, and that's what's important to know.

Yes but a disorder is a psychological problem which causes death through other causes (Anorexia is not a cause of death. Malnutrition due to anorexia is a cause of death).

Depression does not cause death directly, thus isn't a disease. It's not about being politically correct, more pedantically correct ;)

I disagree with that defintion. A disorder is "a pathalogical condition of mind or body", as answers.com nicely puts it. Death through other causes is not a prerequisite, fortunately. Think of schizotypal disorder, avoidant personality disorder, cognitive disorder (with or without NOS) or seperation anxiety disorder. Just to name a few.

Depression is effectively a screwed-up neurotransmitter household in your brain. This can happen for multiple reasons, some people even get depressed during winter time because of low daylight exposure. In severe cases it becomes unbearable for people, which may lead to their decision that they're no use for society and society could just as well do without him or her. It's always tragic when someone reaches that point and possibly actually commits suicide.

Yes, poor wording there. I wasn't attempting to suggest death always occurs in disorders.
