Rent-a-Road

Post by Felps »

:D

Hi fellows,

This is my first topic, in a game forum, so please help me with my mistakes OK. ( Oh!! I'm brazilian and my english is not perfect , but i'm still trying make contact  )

So, my sugestion ( I didn't find another topic for this), is make some kind of payment for use roads of another company, or even (MAYBE) roads for little cities. HOw is suposed to be ??

I explain, :O ..lol

I think it's unfair another company uses the road you built, without a payment, because I think only Who builds, pay the tax for maintenance, BUT this same road can give a growing increase, even financial, to another company.

So , I think would be better if everybody do some payment for those tracks in use, who dont' belongs them.

OR just divide the TAX of maitenance for those uses the roads.

What do you think, guys???

To be honest? I find it boring. Sorry to disappoint you.
Too much of a trouble for so little.
Anyway, people always complain they have too much money after a few decades (if not years).
More income will be just... unnecessary, i think

OK! I'm not disapointed. :)

But let me try again. lol

For me, The Economical process of TTDX is wrong  , not completely, but in some cases, this mistakes causes other problems like this one you pointed, "There is a lot of money after some time, in game".

The ideia of toll's, or even divide the taxes, is not wrong, they are ORIGINAL, they happens nowadays.

If the problem is have much money, so lets fix this problem(or just spend it  ), and not avoid other little things, just because will bring more money, even more because, won,t be just others have to pay for your road, but you will pay to, and can be some Big and expensive difference beteween the prices for contruct and maintain the roads, and pay for uses others builted.

For these problem of have to much money,,, WELL this is the IDEA of any bussiness, right ??? SUCCESS 8)

But , I agree, that it happens very easy in this game, but just for those ones, who played many times and learn how to do this , and didn't CHEAT it.

And I think, that with so many options of enable, disable, increase, decrease, etc... It is Obvious that the original idea/"econimal control" of the game loose some control of (richnness, i don't know if this written is right)

Please, correct me for better learning, OK! I'll appreciate. :D

I just want to point out that the game is not about economy, but about transportation.
The game is not intended to be a simulation of real life either (I HATE those two words and all those who represent he same idea).

I do understand your point, but it would not bring sufficient interest to be implemented.
That does not mean it should not be implemented.
If you have the knowledge, devotion and time to work on it, do it, by all means.
But i doubt anyone will make it for you. There are already way too many interesting work in progress.

Uhhh!

Sorry man! I didn't came here to be hated for somebody.

Don't hate guy!! be happy :D . The game is for fun, right! And the real world, is for real ( I'm live on it and I think you too, so what is the problem!! if you love fantasy, you have a special scenario for you, called "toyland" ,there the idea is to be "fantasious"), and this game, like the original one, is YES to be a simulation of transportation systems, but like any transportation system , it has to have a econimical system, and if the game is based on REAL things, LIKE TRUCKS, TRAINS, HOUSES, CARGO, COMPANIES, EVEN CURRENCY, etc, etc etc, why the other little thing like this one a have, JUST suggestted, have to be unreal.

the real one problem in game design, today, is to do things exactly like the real ones, cause inventing and fantasy, is much more easy to think, am I wrong?

Lets leave this discussion for other topic right.

I have came here just to give my suggestion, and know yours.

Thanks for say it!

I will wait for other posts too see the opinion of more people right ???

Hate? not at all. You might have misunderstood me.

I've heard so many times that such or such feature should be implemented because it is done that way in real life that those words really drive me mad. Being a game, TTD builds its own world, with its own logic and reality. It bares some resemblance with "reality" but I doubt it should be reinforced at any price. The perspective is not as real life, the ratio between the size of a truck, a house, a boat, a tree are not the same as real life, everything.... It is different, and it was meant to be different.
Felps wrote:and if the game is based on REAL things... why the other little thing like this one a have, JUST suggestted, have to be unreal.
Because i don't think they are BASED, but rather INSPIRED, which is not the same thing, in my book at least.
Felps wrote:the real one problem in game design, today, is to do things exactly like the real ones, cause inventing and fantasy, is much more easy to think, am I wrong?
I do not subscribe to this point of view. I think that games are meant to be an escape from the daily routine. I find myself much more confortable when i can immerge myself in something that is not my daily ration of problems and obligations (might be why i'm a diver too). So, i guess that the problem is more of choosing the game that fits your need rather to try to make them fit yours.

That's the whole point of these exchanges. it would be fruitless to simply say "Cool" and nothing more. Saying nothing at all is even worse, like you're all alone in your room...
Anyway, these are my personnal opinion.

Very good!

Now we are saying the same "LANGUAGE", even though mine is bad. lol

I agree with you i many things, and i think that I used some Words not so good, to say what I was wondering.

I choose this game, because, I love simulation games, I used to play along ago, I remeber to play Simcity in the SuperNES, after in computer, and others games , like you I think!!

I just thought, as many games are made of little parts, and this one have the "ability" to grant new parts/modifications/etc. ,this one could be , just one more part for those people who think nice and/or Usefull.

But I new on game development, I don't know basics yet, to do this implementation. And because this I'm suggestting.. :D

But , it's all right.

By the way, I have an idea about the layout of trucks station. Where can I suggest, or Ask if it's possible to do??

Thanks belugas.

Nope. I did not played much when i was younger. The only game that really got me was the series of Myst/Riven/Exile and such. EVASION :D

It has. But somehow, the inclusion of new features has to be kep in balance with the usefullness of it. To one point, it might grow too big to be still maintainable. So there is a line that has to be drawn.
Felps wrote: By the way, I have an idea about the layout of trucks station. Where can I suggest, or Ask if it's possible to do??

No problem.
There is an effort been done as we speak to allow modification of the airports (Seach for newGRF airpots). Since airports are the biggest station system in the game, they make a perfect "lab" for station layout changes. So eventually, one day, it might be reasonable to think truck/bus stations, sea ports etc might be available for some redesing.
Until then, you could still talk about your ideas, even maybe start to actually draw some graphics/sprites/whatever though :)

Personally, while I think that such concept could come as a relation from reality, and I'm all up to see some realism added to the game in a few matters, I don't think such a system would benefit the game in either way.

The question I have to put you is: Why?

If you want this to be a modifier to the gameplay, there should be a reason on the change of the mechanics.
I cannot see it.

Single Player: Between Sandbox and competition with the AI, I see such sort of income to be of little use. Sure, the AI would be dumb enough to use your road and give you money, but, would such a minor cash boost be of any point?

Multi Player: I could imagine that in some cases one player could or would eventually end up using other player's road pieces, but these would be usually small pieces that would be barely worth anything... and any major road would just be replicated by the other player, so it scratches any tactical/financial advantage even on the long run for the player hopping to collect toll fees.

After all these years of playing TT, I'm more of a sandbox person.. especially with all the brilliant features that OTTD is now providing that make out of this game for me like a huge virtual train set... so I may be missing something on your implementation idea of such.

THis is right too!

I said, because in my games, of course, I see many times, the computers changing its route, to use my roads, because, I did some better (short, I guess) route!! in this case, would be very interesting to have this little tool to receive some extra money. OF COURSE it wouldn't be enough too be rich, but this can be an option for users, change their rent values, understand me?? And in a competition game, we have to be over your oponents, because you need do more money for you, if possible, winning its bussiness. Its' a wild world. lol

But there are many styles for play, from greed/ambicious++ style until pacific and happy guy style. :]

In this (ambicious killer mode) you can make the oponents life a hell, doing concurrency in all bussiness that he owns, just to reduce his receips, right.

in the pacific mode, you can just stay away of oponents being the one that do some kind of work for some cities, grow up this way by time.

Anyway, coukd be simple, but could be better. Depends of player and his strategy to make money.

I didn't think in all Scenarios yet, of course, this can done be here with your opinion, right!

Like belungas mentioned, I have too, a favorite kind of game, and I have to find the game that fits in my preference, and not change it to fit in my opinion. But if this was a rule, or even a better advise to follow, so why the TTD gamers decided to make a new "version" of the original TTD, changing things, fix others, etc.

I beleave, that one reason was there weren't games that fits in the needs of this gamers, right. So they decided to do they own version with they opinions of what, how and why should be in the game or not, try to following a "logical line".

I think this same way. I prefer games that are simulations of reality, could have some fantasy of course, but if it has major things based or like belungas said INSPIRED in real things, i think that other parts of game will "fit better" if would be like reality too. I don't wanna be boring with this. It's just want to explain my point of view, understand me?

By the way, thaks for the tips about airports, I will check.

Thanks guys!!

Exactly my favorites - did you play the whole series? And let's not forget Civilization, TTO and TTD!

On-topic: I don't like it much when too much reality gets into gameplay, forcing me to 'micromanage' too many things. TT games are 'Arcade' and shouldn't be real life simulations, IMO. OTOH, I definitely use TTDPatch as a substitute for the model railway I don't have room, time and money for.

There is a patch, most of us know to share track, stations, etc. I like it a lot, and I 've played it in MiniIn.
For roads things are a bit different: There already exist roads belonging to the city. The suggestion could have some applicability if we have very few cities in huge maps and highways, private cars are introduced. (tolls to collect money). The whole setting suggests that construction of roads will be far more expensive than currently is.

Hi Belugas, i didn't find this topic :( , maybe I did something wrong on the search. Can you confirm if it still able to be found, please!!!

by the way, do you now where I can find information about "how the trucks sprites are shown/controlled in a Station sprite". Just to confirm if they are in the trucks Nfo file.

It's still able to be found, but make sure you spell airports correctly.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.
