First of all, welcome! :D And second, some advices:

- The best thing to start with, which makes a lot of money, is to build long coal routes. It'll give you a lot of money, so you can expand quickly and build big networks in no-time.

- To keep the cities happy where your coal stations are, build a bus service in these cities. Don't worry, one bus and two bus stations is enough to keep the city happy

- If two cities close to eachother, where your bus services are running have grown really big (500+ population), you could build a passenger service between them with trains, it'll make good profit as well :)

- If you have a steady income after this, you can go on and expand your network with copper, livestock, grain, wood and so on, untill you entire the whole TTD world.. 8)

Below are some screenshots of networks with trains.

You should especially pay attention to the way the signals are placed  (Note: these screenshots are made with OpenTTD, but you can make the same with TTD)

/me stands corrected.

Anyway - now I've actually read the thread (...), let me add my two cents.

It really depends how you want to play the game. Is it purely for enjoyment, or are you looking to recreate a railway network and it's features?

Starting with the easiest options in the options menu is always good, and certainly playing with no AI helps too, because you can have a little play with making the game work.

If you just wanna get started, the coal routes are good. Always a winner. Especially say, a 5 tile train between a coal mine and power station about 20-30 tiles away. You can rake in about £20-30k a year with that.

As for trucks - they're not profitable in the later years, for sure, but they most certainly are in the early years, especially if you're using a rail set that only has weak trains (such as the UKRS).

Buses are always good for cross-city runs, especially if you have two railway stations in a city that have too many passengers, bunging a couple of buses on a route between them works wonders! Early on, a simple point to point bus route in a town can make it grow at an alarming rate!

Best of luck, have fun :)

I might be new here, but I've been playing the game for years (since 2001). Everytime I decide of stopping, I start another game.
Out of pure experience, a huge word of advice-
Never use road vehicles when your starting a game. Building rail transport or ships initially helps A LOT. Also, build a lot of airplanes (preferably Darwin 300s - they carry 300 passengers).
Start with rail->ships->aircrafts...

Welcome Trigger

I myself disagree slightly with your statement as without a bus service in towns near your network, many of them will cause you problems if you do too much terraforming. This is the main reason for road vehicles, as well as being good to transport resources over short distances (too short for trains).

Also a warm welcome from me. (I'm the forums furniture so don't mind me really. :P )

I always start with coal trains, they are maybe quite the investment (because it isn't cheap mostly) but coal gets you cash fast. Then I go onwards in expanding my network. I add some buslines later and then when I have the cash at hand, I build aircraft and maybe a few single passenger ferry lines. (With hovercrafts.) :)

Well I think everyone has it's own style of playing but this is how I start and load my bank account full with money, lot's of vehicles, and giant networks. :D
