TTDLX in Hasbro's "Tycoon collection"

Post by Mike Wagstaff »

Hi!

I have a few questions regarding TTDLX in Hasbro's "Tycoon
Collection". First, is it the proper, latest version of
TTDLX, rather than just an ehanced version of the original
with the scenario editor bolted on?

Secondly, is it a native Win32 app, rather than the DOS-based
version which I have currently? I only ask because ideally
I'd like to play it under Win 2000 (yes, I know!!).

Thanks!

-Mike [http://games.hplx.net]

P.S. A big "Thank you!" to all the hard-working TT site
owners out there for the excellent sites, and Josef for his
simply amazing patch!

Bleh. It's DOS based, and always will be, because DOS is the best OS of all
time.

Hi,

The version is a WIN32 version, it uses DirectX 2, but runs with DirectX 7.0
fine. It does not run on pure DOS.

It was a conversion by FISH (UK) LTD. Who helped Sawyer on RCT.

Latest version? As far as I know, there's only one version of TTDLX...
What I meant to check was that it was not just TTO + World
editor, which I seem to remember was once missold as TTDLX
(maybe I'm just imagining this!). So long as Josef's patch
works with it, I'll be happy!
Bleh. It's DOS based, and always will be, because DOS is the best OS of all

This is now going to get slightly off-topic, methinks! <g>
Why exactly do you think that is DOS the best OS of all
time?

Does anybody know if my patch works with this one? It's unlikely, but
not entirely impossible. Otherwise I may have to buy it...

Well... let's see... DOS itself doesn't crash, as opposed to WinBlowz. Only the
programs crash DOS... no worries about memory... you don't have to worry about
IRQ and settings if there's a conflict... etc...

The version is a WIN32 version
So I wonder if this means it will work better with the SB sound cards.....

Oooh, I love these arguments. No-one wins, but everyone likes to chip in -
like so many great online debates......
DOS itself doesn't crash, as opposed to WinBlowz
Windows doesn't crash either - a program in the Windows environment
crashes... just like a program in a DOS environment can crash. (Or 'hang'
.... sounds less drastic)
no worries about memory
Chunky has said what I was going to say...
you don't have to worry about IRQ and settings
Hmmm - in DOS, my TTDX installation asks me IRQ and DMA settings... and I
have to ensure my soundcard has the same settings... but I guess you're
right - I don't exactly lay awake worrying about them.
etc...
Exactly.
And thats my point, see? What are you worried about?

I have an SB Live! value and it doesn't seem to work at all for me. How
bizarre. RCT works fine and always has.

The game launcher gives four options, No Midi, General Midi, FM
Synth/SoundBlaster, and SoundBlaster AWE32. Tried them all, none work.
Damn.

This is a known problem - and boils down to the SB16 emulation.
There is a patch for it on the Creative website.

Tycoon also only really likes IRQ 5 ... so make sure your card is hard set
to this (yes, I know Tycoon allows other settings!!)

This may (or may not) help!!

It's true what you say about DOS being more reliable than
Windows, but as the other posts say, it's not true about the
memory / IRQ stuff. Plus, while the Microsoft monopoly might
not be great for all things, at least it ensures that
programs are more or less consistent, and generally far easier
to use (if not always quicker) than their DOS counterparts.

Yeah..But its MUCH easier to free up mem in DOS.
In Win its a bugger.

Win32 as the patch is excellent.

The resulting crash in Windoze usually causes EXPLORER to cause an illegal
fault.

I find Windoze programs much harder to set up, simply because of all the mess

In DOS you only run one thing at a time. You only use that 640 K for one thing.

Um... what problems with DirectX? I've never had a problem
with it after using it on 6 or 7 (totally different)
computers. Besides, I still remember having to edit the
Config.sys / Autoexec.bat to squeeze out those last few
precious kilobytes of memory required to run many DOS games.
Nightmare times!

Boot disks? Memmaker? 640 kb limit? Give me DirectX any day
of the week! I only wish that companies would rewrite many
of the old DOS classics (such as Wing Commander Privateer,
The Manager, Sensible World of Soccer) to work seamlessly
under Windows.
