Raven's Graphics (New Graphics engine)

Post by Alltaken »

hey guys, i thought i would include some pictures of the Graphics raven has been doing for OTTD's new GFX engine. (the one which has yet not been coded :P)

he has been creating these graphics for Simutrans, however he has also been creating them for OTTD's new GFX engine at the same time.

the images i will show now are set in a simutrans background with simultrans style tracks and grass. and these images are using Simutrans' lighting setup (which is different from OTTDs by a certain degree, so will be different from these images) but the same vehicles will be available in OTTD

the OTTD tracks and grass will be like this image (to keep in style with chris sawyers original)
http://doug.mudpuddle.co.nz/albums/ottdwip/rounded3.jpg

the OTTD lighting setup and render size will be like this

------------------the real stuff----------------------

A few of Ravens trains. i believe all of these are from his american set, he has done all sorts of other sets of graphics. trams, trains...... so many that i havn't even seen all of them

so guys, work is certainly happening on OTTD new Graphics, and we pretty much have enough 3d models for a 100% playable game already, we just need to start converting these files into sprites.

we still need these types of sprites.

Planes
Buildings (anything and everything, offices, houses, industries, airports, ports, stations..........)
boats
more road vehicles

things which have basicly been done already

Rail tracks
Grass tiles (still need many different climate types, i have the files to automatically create these types, and i can create every type of climate in about 10 mins each climate, about 80 somthing tiles per type)
roads/ airport runways
trains

Raven keep them coming, post your images as you do them :D everyone wants to see this stuff ;)

Aren't the engines somewhat too short?

those coal wagons loot bit out of scale though.
well i will answer this for raven (not sure if i understood him correctly, but it seems to make sense)

OTTDs new GFX engine will be designed hopefully to have variable length vehicles, so things can be done to any size, and trains will be able to fit in the same area, but have totally different numbers of wagons.

Simutrans' graphics are set length like OTTD so would be out of proportion/scaled to fit. (i think this is correct. but don't kill me if i am wrong)

Raven has created all the files to the correct scale. (for OTTD)
then has scaled them down for the direct purpose of putting in simutrans.

so they are correct scale, just not these pictures of them (since many of these pictures are from simutrans)

so do not fear people, they are correct in cyberspace somewhere, and will be correct at the end.

I meant the coal wagons were bit out of scale compared to the locomotives, its almost as tall as some of the Modern American diesel engines, and i don't think it was ever that tall.

The bottom set of graphics have a hand pixeled feeling to them, which (as I've said numerous times before) I absolutely love.

The moment the graphics look rendered (machine generated), they loose their personality, heart and soul, and I immediately feel distanced from any game which uses them.

Raven's graphics is the first that I don't feel that way with. Damn, when I look at them a second time, they look like something I'd create by pixel pushing. There isn't a single trace of pre-rendering in them. It is absolutely brilliant.

I hope the buildings will keep the same feeling (many of the buildings in TTD had a lot of small touches and a lot of personality).

EDIT: I just saw the "lighting setup" picture of the airport... That is absolutely not in Chris Sawyer's original style! That is in the industrial wasteland style of Rollercoaster Tycoon and Locomotion! The original TTD graphics do not look like everything is made out of plastic! It's more like sculpted clay, just like the (unlit?) trains in the bottom picture are.

If the OTTD graphics are going for a realistic style, the game is going down the drain, because it is not a realistic game. It is a fun sandbox game, and the graphics should emote just that!

well the airport is not finished. so that could be a possible reason.

have you seen images of Sim City 4 (i think its no 4)?

because those images are all done with computer graphics, however are totally amazing.

Chris' style was developed due to "limitations" in both colour pallet and image size. removing those limitations as well as trying to comprimise with user requirements is 100% impossible. its trying to find that balancing point.

we still have many months to perfect this style, so nothing is final now.

i take all crit into account.

Impressive, most impressive (but you're not a jedi yet) :D

It looks perfectly, I wish I could help, but I don't get blender... it's strange and difficult to me :?

Anyway, how much people are doing the 3D graphic? Alltaken and Raven, just two persons?

no, basicly just Raven, i have done very little. i have basicly taken on the rolw of building all the standards and technical things, so that other artists do not need to worry about anything but the modeling.

i.e. things like making the ground sprites tileable, and automating their creation. doing the lighting setup, organising the scale everyone works to, automating the sprite outputs of the vehicles.....

Raven says he can do an entire set of trains in under an hour now. :D

other people doing graphics for it, is up to the individuals, if you decide not to help based on how many people are currently helping, well its your choice, but not perhaps being the pioneer would be good :D

I'd help as soon as I learn how to use blender, independent from number of modellers
I was just curious about number of people making models.

I can help with skinning, since I'm more 2D gfx maker than 3D modeller
