Background train cars.

Post by Axlrose »

I was unsure if I should post this idea under "Suggestions" or in this forum since it is a graphical idea.

Every now and then, I will see a side section or a spin-off track from the main section of track with a few cars sitting upon them. Usually these cars are used for either loading or unloading a nearby business. There are no engines nor cabooses connected, so I would not want this potential idea to be just an idling train. Nor do I want this to be considered as a piece of track since a train passing through a graphic of a boxcar would look silly. Perhaps it could be classified as a station similar to a waystation. Or if possible, the ability to add buildings next to rails (which could lead into bigger projects).

I'll try and "draw" my idea using the keyboard.

============================== (main real track)
\===Boxcars sitting here===/ (graphic picture only)

What I envision is a busy station with the appearance of a dozen tracks going all about while the game sees only the maximum seven stations connected. Depending upon the nearby station, copying the graphical cars from a set like the United States train set would keep the flavor. Thus a station dealing with oil and petro would not have pictures of grain cars nearby.

I might be confusing people, and if so, I'll try and explain my idea again. Yet someone might gleam what I mean and run with the idea. Unfortunately, I would not have the first idea how to go about this project since I am quite dumb when it comes to coding, much less drawing.

Thanks for reading,

I just got back from a long day of work which doesn't make it easier for me to read and understand this

If I Read Correctly, you want fake trains nearby stations to fake realism?

Yes! Whereas I rambled on and on, you hit the idea right away Purno.

So is it possible, and if so, how would the fake trains be classified: building, station, waystation to the game proper?

You can do it like Michael Blunck is doing with his stations, the space between each rail can have a siding for trains, that trains never try to access, but it got wagons on the siding.

[EDIT]Bah me and Patchman posted the same time[/EDIT]

Right. As far as the game is concerned, those tracks and cars don't even exist, they're only eye-candy. But they produce the effect you're after. They're a scenery element like anything else. If you wanted that sort of yard for the US set, you're welcome to draw one.

It would be so cool to be able to park unrostered locos and cars in dissused track. Possible now except loco looses reliability.

Neat if loco's did not loose reliability when inactive or parked.

Could we reproduce Depots in another form, so as to look like a siding, great doubts. Forgive me i am musing out loud. :)

Having a depot that looked like a siding wouldn't do any good, as trains are serviced when they ENTER a depot, not when they EXIT it.

However, you raise an interesting point here. Would it be possible to make it so that trains don't lose reliability when they are in STOP mode?

or maybe slower? But don't expect a loco, which stood unused for 30 years to be in factory conditions...
