Personally I think the current way of doing it is the best, It is how many viaducts in the UK look (unless you count Brunel's GWR bridge at Maidenhead but that's a bit unique).

purno: that may look odd
just to be clear; my theory makes the even numbers have the top new one and the odds have an extra short one at one end

I think this option for odd-numberd lenght would be much nicer and more realistic:

In addition to actually being possible, unlike the other one. The odd tile on bridges is always the center one.

I have read the topic... but isn't this a better option. Allthough I do not have the time to draw it at this moment. But it is realistic. I only don't know if it can be coded. It's a lot of drawing work that for sure! BTW old means post 1975 and new means after 1975 in my idea.

I like that :)
apart from the upper arch, this is a viaduct, so an upper arch would not be plausable, especially in the pre 1975 dates, I think a girder section should work better there

Oh yes, the overarch wasn't invented until 1975...

That rather famous one happened to open in 1932 and I know there are others that pre-date that.

Ultimately, the best solution is the one we've currently got.

It's the idea guys. I know my dutch hystory well and the in Arnhem there is a famous arch gilder bridge where my English friend fight so wel. It's just the idea of building that way. Tomorrow I will be more specified if you want to.

Did I type that? I'm just saying that an overarch would not blend in nicely with the rest of the bridge.

m3henry and Ameecher...

Maybe my expression was not clear. The picture I have posted is just an idea of how it can be done.. What I ment by the picture is the following.

At the start of the game, for example 1921, there only will be 1 tile viaducts build off, for example, natural stone. Wood in the pillars is weird cause 1921 is not middle ages. Maybe you can include a small iron nailed arch over 2 tiles with wooden platform to drive over it. Maybe with some asphalt paper on it. Can you imagine what I mean?

At that time constructions with a arch were invented but not strong enough or much to expensive to build at normal usage and spanning a large distance.

From 1935 you can maybe use old concrete with welded iron arches with iron driving platform. This type can include arches with 3 tiles and the 1 tile sections can be concrete or iron sections.

After, let's say, 1960..??.. concrete 1 tile sections are used with iron bridges without an arch but other structure with towers.

As you can see time era's can be included but that wasn't the question of m3henry... He only asked what are the options. And I gave you my suggestions. And that included only the structure howto. Which structure to use is another question.

whith some pixel chopping I've managed to come up with this:

it needs the curves smoothing. The extra long span is just a demonstation

Seems like a rather unstable bridge. Looks like it would collapse immediately.

well, in the case of the Maidenhead Railway Bridge;
The board of the Great Western Railway did not believe that the arches would stay up under the weight of the trains and ordered Brunel to leave the wooden formwork used to construct the arches in place. However, Brunel simply lowered the formwork slightly so that it had no structural effect, but appeared to be in place. Later, when the formwork was washed away in floods, but the bridge remained, the strength of the arches was accepted.

but remember, the bridge has bits missing

The arch needs to be more of an arc for the 2 tile long arc. It is now completely flat for the biggest part :s.

The thing is, the Maidenhead bridge is a gentle arch. Whereas the one you've drawn, because of the way it has to fit over trains does not have the gentle curve so does not look structurally sound.

It wouldn't be a bad idea if it wasn't for the scale and perspective of TTD.

Ameecher, I have not drawn it, I have removrd parts of the bridge that don't need to be there, I haven't and I won't make the arch smooth, it is a demonstration of what it would look similar to.
