Niiiice!

It was my first trip to even be in a new car dealership. All my previous cars were old bangers so i was more used to walking around very bad-looking cars and finding one that was the least bad looking in a field of badly laid tarmac. I felt like i should have turned up in a suit & tie to the new dealership instead of my usual jeans & novelty graphic shirt. Still super weird how i now own a car and yet... do not own a car. Apparently as soon as it is officialised at Kia's side they'll give me the vehicle identification number (VIN) so i can more accurately track it through its adventure of... becoming in existence.

Oh sweet! I remember watching that show when i was young. The original run ended in 2003, and it was rebooted 2014-2019 semi successfully. We have so many TV quiz shows here, it amazes me how we've not run out of participants yet! Fifteen to One was one of the more serious and hard quizzes here, and winning contestants often went on to do other shows or progress up the quizzing leagues of the world. There was also an odd charm of how little talking went on and it was all quick fire questions rather than the modern more casual chats between questions.

In Sweden there were 8 of us instead, I suppose because we are a smaller country so contestants were harder to find! I think I was knocked out as the number 5 person, so mediocre but not embarrassingly poor! A friend of mine went on Swedish Millionaire, and won 250 000 SEK (£20 000ish). I don't recall the question she chose to stop at, but I do recall it was football related and I knew it easily!
I still remember your appearance on Zernebok Radio’s Millionaire quiz. I must still have a recording of that somewhere…

Nice. We have a Peugeot 5008 (2015 model, so not the newer SUV variant) which has been pretty decent. Had to buy a minibus last year too though, as we no longer really all fit in the 5008 (especially with any kind of baggage, buggy, etc) - that’s got 9 seats, so a couple of spare seats if we have visitors!

In high school (1990-1994) I made two appearances on "The Brain Game", a local TV quiz show competition for area high school academic teams.

I've also been interviewed by TV stations several times over the years, the most recent being last year when I helped lead a protest rally in my town.

Or better yet reboot it as a podcast. Get with the times, Owen, I'll return to compete again!

I really was born into a Peugeot family, surprising as that may be. My grandmother drove the classic Peugeot 205, she owned that from the mid-1980s until around 2005-2006 I think. Dad also drives a Peugeot, and now this borrowed 3008 is technically my second. The current lineup of Peugeot cars is really nice looking, the build quality is brilliant especially for this price range, and I particularly enjoy the small low steering wheel.

So lately i have been patching together a Windows 98SE machine from parts, I don't know why. I fully know I will set it up, hear that nostalgic Windows 98 opening sound, and then immediately go "now what".

Oh boy, i was not prepared for the challenge, you have to either buy specific parts, which are also commonly dead now, I dunno why, something about AGP graphics cards means a lot of the ones i have tried are just dead (and tested in known working machines, also dead there), or try your luck using some modern parts that may or may not be almost compatible. Also dang i forgot how hot Pentium 4's ran, that Netburst architecture was indeed not good at all.
It got to the point where I had invested far too much time & money (the best Pentium 4s are now pretty expensive on ebay...) for me to just throw it all in the bin and rage quit.

So anyway I now have a Win 98SE machine just sat in the corner of the room abandoned after like 1 hour of actual use outside of the effort & pain to get it running. The brain does dumb things for a nostalgia hit, should have just downloaded the 98 boot up sound and put it on my Win 11 machine, or y'kno... youtube'd it...

I've got enough legacy parts in my house for an authentic MS-DOS 6/PC-DOS 7/WFW 3.11 machine, a Win95/98 machine, a Windows NT/2000 machine, and currently using a machine that started out as Windows XP and has run Win 7 and now Win10.

Women's football eh?

Sweden beat the No 1 ranked team, and the reigning champions, USA. Sweden beat the best performing team this tournament, Japan. Now, we are in the semi finals. Come on Spain, show us what you've got. We are winning this.

I've been watching quite a lot of this, I find it a much calmer game than men's football, also there seems to be a lot less obvious diving...

Definitely. The women's game is probably just as technical as the men's, but they are slower and less physical. As well as less diving.

As a Swede, comparing the two national teams (men and women), the biggest difference is that our women win. Obviously that makes it more entertaining for me!

Australia and England through to the semis today. If we beat Spain, I hope we get to play Australia in the final for 3 reasons:

1. It's their home, beating the host in the finals would be astounding
2. The Australian coach is actually Swedish, meaning two Swedish coaches would go head-to-head on the biggest stage
3. I think their style of play suits Sweden, and facing them we could actually win the gold

Currently, I just... I have to bet on Sweden. We've seen off USA, the number 1 ranked team. We then beat Japan who, up until this point, had been utterly dominant in every game they played. Ranked 3rd before the world cup, we are also the highest ranked team remaining, with No 2 Germany also out. So historical performance speaks for us too.

I am looking forward to the England / Australia match. We've always had rivalry with them in sports, most notably Cricket, where we do The Ashes every 2 years. However it also tends to flood into Soccer too so, hopefully both sides keep it fun & friendly.

In other news, i do find it weird how certain teams have rivalries with other teams, for no discernable reason, but the fans get so hyped and annoyed over this random made up rivalry to cash in, then the clubs & police complain when it gets a bit spicy. The same happens with country v country, i guess for ENG/AUS there is probably background for it, but as far as soccer rivalries go its relatively calm.

Spain vs Sweden will i think be a test of how developed all around are Sweden, Spain did 5-0 over Zambia 5-1 with Switzerland... although lost 4-0 to Japan so, who knows?

And we did 5-0 over Italy, and have only conceded two goals all tournament!

I think Sweden is very very strong defensively, but what we showed against Japan implies we can create goalscoring opportunities too. I think, out of all 3 playoff games, Spain should on paper be the easiest one. That being said, USA were better than us and we got lucky so maybe our luck will run out.

Ahead of the USA game, I felt it was a 50-50 game. Ahead of the Japan game, I felt the Japanese had a 60-40 advantage. Ahead of the Spain game, I feel we have a 60-40 advantage. So it can really go either way. Heja Sverige! 🇸🇪

Well Sweden managed to walk away with a third. Can't lie, I had my money on Australia for that, i thought the home crowd advantage would have fuelled them through, but you stormed to a 2-0.

Next up, can the England team get its first World Cup Win since 1966, and it has never been done by the womens team for us. Neither Spain nor England has even played in a Womens World Cup final match, this has all the ingredients of a fantastic match, and I hope support comes flooding in for both Spain & England. Tonight for me, and early night so i can be in front of the TV for that match!

Yet another bronze medal. I feel like we could have beat Spain, because that semi final was incredibly close and some rather inexplicable referee calls went the wrong way in that game. Australia had no stamina, and the Swedish win bronze looked safe all game. I will remember this tournament for two things:

1) I can safely say I am now more interested in our women's national team than our men's national team. The girls win. The guys don't.
2) I'll likely remember 2023 as "the one that got away". We could have beat Spain, we could have beat England too. We could have been champions of the world. I don't see it happening again in 2027. Spain, England, Australia, France, Japan, USA, Netherlands, heck even Colombia and Morocco. These teams have younger players coming through making a difference. We still rely on our veterans. Caroline Seger, our captain going into this tournament, is 38. Our vice captain, who scored that final 2-0 rocket against Australia, Kosovare Asllani, is 34. We run the risk of slipping behind in the coming years as the sport grows and money is invested that little Sweden cannot match.

Still, it was damn exciting to follow them through this tournament. And seeing the Swedish team spirit, them dancing in the dressing rooms, singing on the bus, acting like a big old family, well that made me proud to be Swedish.

Fun fact. Kosovare Asllani is born in Sweden, but her parents are from Kosovo. I don't know if they named her that for fun, or if it's a common name in the region, but at least she's not likely to forget her heritage.

We did not win the World Cup, but we achieved something else entirely.

We are only the 3rd country to top the Women's Ranking, after USA and Germany. And today marks the 50th anniversary of Sweden's first international game, a 0-0 tie with Finland back in August 1953.

Kinda depressing that the only reason the world cup is still talked about internationally is that stupid kiss now ...

Was a fun tournament that had everything you want from a football world cup. And then that stupid bit right at the end ^^;
