Title game for OpenTTD 1.1 releases

Post by planetmaker »

It has been often proposed that OpenTTD shall have new or a different title game. Just like started with the 1.0 branch we also like to offer for the 1.1 branch the chance to compete for the title game. This is an early reminder, you still have lots of time, so no rush. But maybe some like to build it slowly :-)

Deadline for submissions is 14th February 2011, 23:59:59 UT, later submissions cannot be accepted. Please attach the savegame to this thread. If you update an existing entry, please indicate which savegame it replaces (link to previous posting).

Upon closing of submissions a final list of all entries with screenshots using both OpenGFX and TTD base sets will be published and open to vote for one or two weeks to create a short list of three entries. This short list will then be subject to a 2nd round of voting, open for one week. Details on the voting procedure will follow here in due time.

Some guidelines for possible title games:

* Map/file size: 256x256 or smaller, maximum of ~150 KiB. You don't need a very big savegame to show a lot, actually most screens can't even show such maps in full. Actually, 128x128 is more than sufficient for 1920x1200, but 64x64 is just a tad small.
* Show as much different things as possible, and try to show how they should be used. For example show the difference between presignals and path signals, standard road stops and drive through road stops. Show steam trains and maglevs, dualheads etc.
* Breakdowns will automatically be disabled, so try the game with breakdowns disabled.
* Cheating for money or making a money losing example isn't a big problem. Cheating to change the landscape is.
* Try to make it visually appealing, also for very big screens. However, put most interesting stuff that doesn't use much space in upper left part of the viewport. It should be appealing with both OpenGFX and the original graphics; this excludes toyland.
* Try to keep the number of simultanious sound effects down. E.g. try to reduce the number of level crossings, but for example keep one or two to show the difference between block and path signals on level crossings.
* And ofcourse the savegame MUST be compatible with clean trunk, so no savegames made by cargodist, IS2, daylength or other patched versions are allowed.
* Do not use AIs; they might be missing for clients. What you can do is make a multi-company game by means of multiplayer.
* Do not use any NewGRFs; NewGRFs can't be loaded in the intro game because that might crash OpenTTD when they are not found among with some coding reasons.

When adding a title game candidate to this thread (you may post as many as you like), please add a screenshot too.

EDIT: Please also only one savegame per posting :-) and it'd be nice, if you could just remove old versions or edit the posting with the old savegame so that it becomes clear that it is deprecated now - it makes it easier for me to not add deprecated savegames nor miss any.

The top left corner looks quite empty though. Try resizing the openttd window to some smaller sizes to see how it looks.

Well in my opinion its a nice first submission!
The monorail-track should be a bit more centralized.
And how often do the trains drive over this little piece of screen-edge?

Maybe you can add an oil-rig, too! The the Helicopter can land there...

i know the rules say to keep the noise down, but the 1.0 title game has a really disturbing sequence of silence in the beginning. so can the new title game be made so it starts out with a sound, so you know the program is actually running? ;)

Ofcourse it can, as long as it isn't a truck starting, plane taking off, plane landing, ship departing, level crossing and such all at the same time. Which is why the request is to keep the number of simultanious sounds down, not the number of sounds in general.

Actually, even at 800x600 the airport, highway and maglev styation are still very much visible...
This time in original graphics!

Thanks :)
But:
I really don't know where I could put anything else (such as more monorail track) without it looking too crowded. I know the monorail is a little obscure, but overall It's pretty busy already. also oil rigs have to be some distance from the shore.

In 800x600 it's better than I expected, I should've tried that myself before making my comment. Don't forget that the central part is covered by the main menu, so I still think the left area is somewhat empty. Maybe you could place an oilrig there?

Here is another tile game I've been working on tonight. It could perhaps have some more details here and there as I realized that I have not demonstrated Pre-signals or block signal level crossings. There are still some room more both on the screen and in the noise amount for more things. However, as it is a mountain ridge, there will be some parts that shouldn't be cramped with road/rail/cities. Also I learned from the title game 1.0 that title games shouldn't be too cramped as that will not look as good as if you leave some parts with open land.

Zuu check that one on an 800*600 screen - I would have thought that there will not be much going on at all.

Well, it wouldn't let me palce an oil rig there; it is probably too close to the shore. However, here is anew improved version which has more monorail track. I hope the map isnt too crowded now...

(Here are some good console commands)
"screenshot no_con" makes a screenshot of the title screen in game without console in main menu
"screenshot big" makes a giant screenshot of the map, which can be used to reveal the rest of the title screen map without renaming the file

Well, there is more than nothing going on in that corner. As I said it's not done yet, and probably a bit more will be added, but I do not want to cramp it. After all it is a mountain ridge.

Some further work has been done, especially on the top-left part.

Edit: Now the trains on the train yard actually go out and run a loop on the new bridges when they exit the train yard and then they queue up to enter the train yard. :-) At the back of the hill there is a regulator that makes the train stay at the train yard for a while before a train may exit.

The problem is that there aren't any 150-200 kmh-ish bridges that looks good with the original graphics. Could maybe downgrade the highway bridge to the 112 km/h bridge though.

I decided to have a stab at it. My title is based around a semi-rural mountain town being served by a mountain railway.
