Some noob questions

Post by theuros »

Hi there,

i played TTD a long time ago ... now i tryed openTTD and i realy like it, but i have some noob questions.

1. i have a big city .. three train stations in it A B and C connected in a circle ... is there any difference if i transport passengers and mail in one or both directions? is better to have two trains wich go A-B-C-A-B-C-A-... or one go in oposite way A-C-B-A-C-B-.... or maybe is better to have three trains .. each go just from one to another station .. like .. first train A-B-A-B-... seccond B-C-B-C-... and third .. C-A-C-A-... ?

2. I have three stations A (load) B(preload) C(destination) .. what is the difference in payement if i transport cargo from A to C directly with one train .. vs. if i transport from A to B with one train and from B to C with another?

3. I use preload station mostly for oil... from oil rigs with ship to preload station and then with trains to refinery .. can i use same te technique for passengers? for example .. i have three cities .. instead of building an airport in each city i'd like to build a big one nearby and transport passengers from all three cities to that airport and then with planes all around ... is this a good idea ?

4. I have two stations in a big city ... first one is an airport and a train station .. seccond is a dock for ships .. the big airport/train stations has arround 300 passengers .. in seccond station for ships i have more than 1.300 passengers .... why ?

5. In long train tracks i get the message that the train is lost .. but is not .. should i use some middle station or what ?

If somebody can answer them i'll appreciate it.

Thanx

A train is lost if it finds no direct route from where it is to where it shall go. A path which involves turning around in a station is not a direct route.

Concerning your other questions: it really doesn't matter one way or another. It depends upon what you prefer really. Each way has its advantages - depending upon the situations.

Hmm.
Let's see now.

1: Unless you're using CargoDist, it probably doesn't matter too much
2: I believe there's no difference at all, but I could be wrong.
3: The technique can be used for any cargo at all. As to it being a good idea, that depends on why it is or isn't needed at the time. If it's cheaper/easier/more efficient to have a ship go down a river to deliver a cargo instead of a train, then by all means do it. The choice of how is up to you.
4: Catchment Area. Each station sign has a catchment area provided by every tile of train station and airport, every bus, tram and truck stop, every dock connected under it. The buildings in your dock station's area are producing more. If the areas overlap, then it could be that passengers see better ratings at it than the airport, making them prefer it. Finally, it could be a result of not enough vehicles servicing that station to take them away, letting them pile up.
5: Check your tracks, routes and orders carefully. Especially when using electric trains.

1) Doesn't matter. Without cargodist cargo does not have a destination so cargo will be unloaded and payment will be received without explicit transfer orders.
2) Payment is determined based on tiles distance and travel time while in transit. As with transfers trains will slow down before a station and when leaving a station, the speed tile ratio may be a bit less effective with transfers. However while using a bit of station walking may compensate this, as well as different trains for different parts of the route. Therefore no definitive answer can be given. All depends on the situation.
3) Answer has been given, it's a matter of playingstyle: do you like to do it that way, a matter of space, is there room for three airports etc.
4) Answer has been given.
5) Yep, you're probably just missing a part of track or a one-way-signal facing the wrong way.

thanx for the answers .. i have another question about train lenght and how big station can be

i various screenshoots i saw long trains ... but the longest station can be only 7 squares so thats mean max train lenght include locomotive is 14 ? ... if i use bigger train it takes too much time to load and unload ... is there something i don't know how to handle this things ?

hom many depots station can have? .. is there a limit ... maybe 12 ?

i can create a big station or smaller one with an airport .. what is area limit ?

Station size is limited by maximum station spread; you can change that setting in Advanced Settings/Stations/Max Station Spread. Maximum value is 64, though.

And then you use the Drag and Drop to build bigger stations or build multiple 7x7 stations together.
Remember you can also use the ctrl key when building stations that are not connected together but you want the same station name.

There is no limit to depot stations as far as I know.

On train getting lost, If I have a bit of a jam at a station, some of the trains will just turn themselves around, (i use One Way lights everywhere) after a while the train will say that it is lost and I have to manually turn it around.

thanx for the answers ..

i have some more questions ..

1. Is there any useful way to use ships ? .. i mean .. they are slow .. they have low cargo capacity compared to real ships ... the most useful is hoovercraft and maybe oil tanker to transport oil from oil rigs ??

2. is worth it to use planes to transport anything else except passengers and mail ? ...maybe goods and valuables ?

4. trams ... i have ugly hude metal things above roads for trams .. i saw in some screenshoots nice rails on roads ... i have some strange graphic addon or i have to install some ?

5. I'd like to have station like this http://www.thesatya.com/ottd/200907-1.png ... what i have to install ?

6. If the station can be spread out 64 squares .. that mean i can build an airport on the edge of the city and then some bus station in the city center like one station ? .. so i get more passengers?

i saw that here are forums also for TT, TTD, Transport empire, locomortion ... so my question is ...

7. Why someone would play TT or TTD when OpenTTD is out wich is much better or i'm wrong ?
8. what is transport empire ?? faild TTD successor ?
9. if i understand corectly locomotion is next TTD ? ... is better compared to openTTD ? .. ok isn't free but doesn't matter

and...

10. OpenTTD patches ... i play openTTD on ubuntu .. i have to manualy install new versions or is done automaticly ?

thanx in advance

2: If the airplanes generate profit, then why not? Air transport is most effective when it comes down to express cargo (i.e. cargo whose value decays quickly over time), though. That usually means passengers and valuables + fruit in tropical climate and food in arctic climate. Check Game mechanics on OpenTTD wiki.

5: ISR NewGRF.

1) Ships are useful for playing styles where they are useful. Like I don't like extremely long bridges or a lot of terraforming.
2) Depends on the purpose, small distances in mountainous terrain, I'd say yes. Again also depends on the planeset, other settings you play with.
3) Is there a three?
4) Screenshot? Newgrf? Other baseset? I don't know as I do not have a crystal ball.
5) I see a nice white background, fix the screenshot ;)
6) Indeed. you can build two stations on opposite ends of the town and you would cover the whole city, no need for transporting the passengers away from the city centre then.
7) TT and TTD are old games from more than ten years ago, OpenTTD is a clone which strives to be the same game with improved gameplay.
8) I don't know as don't play that game.
9) Play the demo (if that exists).
10) If you, with patches, mean new OpenTTD versions: I do not use Ubuntu so I cannot help you with that one. However, patches (as in new features not yet in the OpenTTD Trunk), you should apply them and compile the game yourself or look in the thread in the development section for builds you can use.

Not exactly true, because the check where to deliver cargo happens at houses (buildings) and if there's no station tile nearby, no cargo will be delivered to station.

On the other side, cargo acceptance check is done at station and that follows this rule (i.e. every tile in (max x, max y) - (min x, min y) rectangle).

That's - to my knowledge - the tropical theme with extra zoom-level in 32bpp. You'll need a patched version and add-on graphics for that.
My bet here: that is a normal screenshot with some graphics-editing (rotation, skew applied later).

It's a combined path-through and terminus station. You might want to do similar things for a major hub or transfer station; possibly an ICE terminal attached to a local terminal.

For the future, please attach images to this forum directly and (if you create screenshots yourself) use graphics in png format.

Hi there!

I also have some noob questions, and didn't want to open a new thread for them, I hope it's ok?

I've read that 2cc set and NuTracks are available through BaNaNaS/ingame download system. However, I haven't been able to find them in the ingame download system, onlye through bananas.openttd.org/en/newgrf - what's my mistake?

How you entered to ingame download system - from main menu (all thing available), from ai settings menu (only ais aer available), from...?
It is also possible that you have old openttd version, incompatibile with nutracks.
