What AI should I use?

Post by thansen1983 »

Hello,

I love playing locally against the AI. I have downloaded all the AI's from downloadable content. But some of them seem a bit buggy...?

I tried a couple... OTVL and AdmiralAI or somthing... And they didnt work at all... One of them built a bus-route with 1 bus-stop and used all his money on bus'es. The other one didnt know how to build a bridge over the water. Why are the available on downloadable content if the are not fully developed? :)

What AI would you guys recommend me using?

I really love PathZilla by Zutty, and PAX Linx by Zuu

Edit: Yes, you should've posted in this forum.

"Not working" is not an error description and not helpful to anyone in any respect. If you think that they don't work properly, please go to the respective AI's development thread and post a screenshot of what you think it does wrong and post also a screenshot of the AI debug log available from the AI settings. Only that way the authors have a CHANCE to know about problems. Plain lamenting is just... painful. For all involved.

Settings in OpenTTD are very diverse and one AI may work excellently with one map while it may have severe difficulties with another. Add to that the diversity of newgrfs people may use and you may _start_ to see the challange an AI author faces. And why wouldn't or shouldn't they make available their AIs. Both AIs which you mention work for me.

The decision which AI is "best" is also strongly subjective. One person likes an AI which builds pretty networks, another wants one which gives you a big challenge, the other doesn't want competition, the third doesn't want road vehicles. So "best" is also not possible to answer. Try several and see whatever suits you. And most important: give feedback to the AI authors. Feedback is what gives many authors joy and satisfaction in writing them - and improving and maintaining them.

I use three groups of AIs - only train building AIs - Denver, trAIns, TransAI, Admiral, ChooChoo, only road building - Mogul, Admiral, Jami, NoCab, Convoy, TransAI and all of the competitive - WrightAI, Admiral ( with all enabled ), NoCab, Convoy, TransAI, trAIns, Mogul, Denver .. Most of the times I achieve a nice game. I find the road building group to be the most competitive ( since when I use these, I prefer to build RVs like the AIs and sometimes I struggle for the win )

Just want to note that PathZilla was made by Zutty, not me. PAXLink on the other hand is indeed made by me. Glad you liked them both though, even though I can't take credit for Zutty's work.
My OpenTTD contributions (AIs, Game Scripts, patches, OpenTTD Auto Updater, and some sprites)

Hey! It was not my intent to offend any of the AI creators. I just want to play and enjoy the game, and lets just say those AI's didnt do smart things in the game i played. And this was on a very flat map with original graphics, so I really cannot see any excuse for why they didnt work.

Relax thansen. The AI developers are doing this in their spare time because they enjoy it, not to please you.

I prefer simpleAI, it's not very smart, but still very nice to play against.

Being a noob in this forum and in openTTD, and trying to find my way through several doubts, it is a bit awkward to me to see such harsh remarks directed at another user like "Plain lamenting is just... painful. For all involved." and "Relax thansen. The AI developers are doing this in their spare time because they enjoy it, not to please you."
Besides being rude (which the original user was not), they add nothing to any kind of useful discussion.
