Re: Photo of the Month: Winner Announced
Cheers guys, will be send you the new topic when you next come online. I feel kinda bad for those of you who got no votes,

Re: Photo of the Month: Winner Announced
It was kind of clear which picture would be the winner, it is photographically the best IMO.

Hm... how is that a rule which can even be remotely enforced? Using digital photography, adjusting colours, darkening or brightening certain areas can be part of the usual routine of image post-processing...andel wrote:9. Photos must not be "edited" beyond sepia toning or black and white. Colour Manipulation or image pasting is not allowed.
And how could one possibly tell without highly time and money-consuming digital forensics?

It was more my worry that people will use digital means to make a reasonable photo good... contrast and brightness can often be difficult to tell but I have a certain amount of trust with entrants here.. colour changing and manipulation is certainly not allowed though and anyone found to flaunt this rule will face a warning or ban from this competition.

When you say colour manipulation, exactly what do you mean?andel wrote:contrast and brightness can often be difficult to tell but I have a certain amount of trust with entrants here.. colour changing and manipulation is certainly not allowed though and anyone found to flaunt this rule will face a warning or ban from this competition.
I'm wondering because some pictures i've taken before look slightly 'dull' (not for the competition entries) so i have tended to make the greens a slightly more realistic green, reds more red, blues more of a blue than grey etc.
What are the limits on colour/contrast etc. Or is it a case of "take it and use it".

Well. If you ever had a camera in your hand which supports raw images - like DSLRs - it gets quite obvious what the "normal" consumer cameras all do: they do image processing (sharpening, filtering, colour-shifting) on their own, depending upon certain image settings like "flash on/off", "sunlight yes/no", "incandescent light" etc pp. That's definitely means to change the colour - which is done all the time. These means are what a good photographer *will* do manually in order to get colours just the way they're supposed to be - which is his artistic license. When I download the images of my camera, the first thing which I'm asked by the camera manufacturer's download tool is to set adjust the brightness level and the colour settings...andel wrote:It was more my worry that people will use digital means to make a reasonable photo good... contrast and brightness can often be difficult to tell but I have a certain amount of trust with entrants here.. colour changing and manipulation is certainly not allowed though and anyone found to flaunt this rule will face a warning or ban from this competition.
What about using colour filters in front of a lense? A polorizing filter? Other means to a possibly quite similar end... And tt's nothing which you couldn't do using chemical photography and fabricating the photos yourself either. The point actually is: there's no way to tell whether something was colour-changed... and a rule which cannot be checked is pointless. For digital photography there's no unambigeous "take and use it" wrt colours as phrased by Geo.c Ghost. Digital colours are a software thing with _all_ digital cameras.
An entirely different matter are photoshoped pictures where things are actively removed IMO, where the information is changed.

Is "Waiting" the subject, or are we still waiting for Ameecher?
I may be avoiding the obvious, but I thought I'd ask.

Re: Photo of the Month: Winner Announced
Well, its removing colours or adjusting the colours to something different - making a mediocre image better.. more over - its just outlining the honesty required by photographers here... I don't want an image to be submitted thats been through 100 filters to try and win against others who have simply got a camera and are doing it for a bit of fun... we're not all in this for picture perfection - we want it to just be a good picture.planetmaker wrote:An entirely different matter are photoshoped pictures where things are actively removed IMO, where the information is changed.
