Why do they call it "OPEN" TTD?
What does the "OPEN" stand for in the name Open TTD?

It stands for Open Source, meaning that anyone can make modifications/patches to the code to improve it.

Actually, it is only open for viewing for everyone. (e.g. here)
You can of course suggest a particular change/patch, and if the developers like it, they will maybe adapt and include it.
It would be pretty chaotic if everyone could just alter the code

No you CAN alter the code, just your own copy of it! The OpenTTD devs wouldn't allow you to use their repositories or to post it on openttd.org, but its still the same code.Roujin wrote:Actually, it is only open for viewing for everyone. (e.g. here)

If you wanted to you could fork the project and make whatever changes you like to it. You could even just change title and sell it on, as long as the code retains it original license and copyright notices. You CAN'T pass it off as your own though, or close the source up (i.e. change the license).
For instance if you found in a years time that the OpenTTD project had died and that no-one was interested in maintaining it anymore, you would have the right to take ALL the code and start up your own project to carry it on. That's how OSS works, and its how many projects get started/finished.

What´s the "original license" and "copyright notices" for "OTTD"?
Isn´t that exactly what "OTTD" does? You CAN'T pass it off as your own though,

Hahaha. Hilarious.Isn´t that exactly what "OTTD" does? You CAN'T pass it off as your own though,![]()
Now, why don't you go fixing your alpine grf, if you are sooo caring about copyrights?
You know, that grf YOU DID that has a LOT of ORIGINAL graphics with SMALL modifications that YOU distributed?
I don't see much a difference between YOUR status and OUR.
Don't you have anything more interesting to do?
If you are not ready to work a bit for your ideas, it means they don't count much for you.
OpenTTD and Realism? Well... Here are a few thoughs on the matter.

Well, not so. Largest group of sprites (drawn by me) are snow overlays to the original sprites. The second largest group are original sprites which had to be included from technical reasons into the .grf, simply because they couldn´t be loaded in-game after changing the climate. For these I had permission on condition that they might not be modified.belugas wrote: Hahaha. Hilarious.

However, there´s a very small number of modified original sprites, namely original ground sprites with added snow, just because at the time I made that .grf, layered ground tiles weren´t possible.
O/c this was an unlucky situation for me, but at that time I felt that inclusion of such a small number of modified original sprites would be insignificant in terms of copyright.
Today (i.e. since years), I won´t release anything containing foreign graphical art, even with permission.
Nevertheless, that´s just "peanuts" in comparison to that much larger breach of copyright we´ve been talking of.
Hope you had your fun.

Michael

Another futile discussion.

I would like to know only this: From whom did you get permission, and what did that permission allow?michael blunck wrote:For these I had permission on condition that they might not be modified.

i was wondering the same!
besides - you know it's not about 'how much' but the fact that copyright material is involved!

What's with the bad blood??? Geez.
Re: Why do they call it "OPEN" TTD?
Hear, hear! Even *I* am getting tired of this.
And when *I*, of all people, start considering dropping someone into my killfile for excessive OpenTTD bashing ... well, the rest of it goes without saying, so I won't belabour the point.

To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.
