The 2ccset: Artist competition

Post by Purno »

The 2ccset Team has decided to hold an Artist Competition. Goal for artist is to create a nice train which can get included in the 2ccset. Winning graphic gets included in the 2ccset.

RULES
- By submitting artwork you give us permission to include it in our set and distribute your work
- You may only submit artwork created by yourself, or artwork you got the copyright of
- The 2ccset Team decided who the winner is. A poll might be the way the Team is deciding
- The submitting artwork must represent a real railway vehicle
- Deadline for submitting work is Sunday August 10th, 0:00 GMT
- The submitted artwork must follow the guidelines mentioned below

GUIDELINES
- The vehicle must be drawn in 2cc and greys.
- The vehicle must have white or yellow head lights and red rear lights, if present on the real model.
- The artwork must fit the current artwork of the 2ccset.
- The vehicle may not be based upon narrow gauge, metro with pantographs, or a vehicle driving on any kind of special track except electrified 3rd rail.
- MUs must contain a head unit, a rear unit, and at least 1 middle unit, both drawn for passenger transport and for mail transport. The middle unit may be improvized but needs to fit the head and rear unit.

Not a bad concept, but what about 2-car DMUs?

The concept of the 2ccSet is that every MU can have every length. Therefor a middle unit needs to be drawn, wether the real thing is a 2 car consist or not. And since most MUs can carry mail too, we need seperate graphics for that too, wether the real thing can carry mail or not. The 2ccSet is not the most realistic set.

To clarify: You may draw 2 car consists (there are quite a few in the set already), but we need a fitting middle coach in the same style.

2 car is realistic, 3+ is game.

Although the more committed among the community only link the same units, most players will just choose a train with the right top speed and then make it the length they want. Possibly double-headed if there are sharp bends and hills.

If they dont care about money :)

The set have quite high running costs, as well as more expensive electric rails. For example wont a TGV Duplex make money unless it is in a longer line with much passangers. A half full train with a short range is bound to loose money :)

And another thing, from a coders perspective. When submitting an entry, please also provide as much statistics as possible...
Typically:
* Introduction year
* Speed
* TE
* Capacity
* Weight

And also, if you draw a MU, please provide the power per unit, not f.eks 2200kw, and then it turns out it is a 6part unit IRL. The running costs get WAY off that way.
Links on an english speaking wikipedia-article, or similar, is also apreciated. (I guess dutch or german also can do, but please transfer it ;))

Do you expect artists to follow your (wrong) scales?

I draw your attention to your drawing tutorial to a passenger coach, aside from the obvious lack of shading your | \ and / views are out of scale compared to your _ view. Using your _ view your / and \ view should be a pixel higher on the side and similar applies to the | view which should be a pixel higher. Also because you leave no gap in between coaches or define where a gap would be you end up with a solid mass of a train which just looks weird. Maybe this is the issue with the dutch and 2cc sets aside from laziness in the shading department.

Popped this one in for a lark...

Class 158 (UK)
* Introduction year 1989
* Speed 90mph
* TE Um, not sure on this figure...
* Capacity 69 seats per one car unit
* Weight 38.5t per one car unit
* Power per one car unit 350 hp (260 kW)

PS Just read Ameecher's post. I'm happy to handle criticism, so that's why I went ahead. ;) :lol:

Not at all. The graphics just got to fit the rest we already got, that includes the artwork from various artists like Wile E. Coyote, Snail and DanMacK.

May I remind you that Purno's Drawing Tutorials was made within half a year I got on TT-forums? Back then I was rather new into drawing sprites for Transport Tycoon, and my sprites weren't that good as they are now. Besides, Purno's Drawing Tutorial was mainly meant for a starting artist, who has to define his own style afterwards. It only explains some basic stuff. Purno's Drawing Tutorials is never updated since it's start. Besides, although it may not be good in your opinions, Purno's Drawing Tutorials seems to be the best tutorial out there, according to Linkage.

Secondly, if you actually had tried the 2ccSet, you'd had seen that my _ views are shaded and got gaps between the coaches. My pixel-skills are continuiously improving.

Thirdly, this is not the topic to discuss the incorrectness and incompleteness of Purno's Drawing Tutorials.

At the risk of being told of for using the wrong topic, but it can split off if needed. Your Drawing Tutorial's can easily mislead, it is fine for someone to develop their own style but they will develop it within the guidelines that they think are right which those aren't. At the very least state somewhere on the site the scale is wrong.

That's a little update I could do relatively easy, indeed. I guess I just need a good picture of the scale then.

Considering part of your very own 2CC set (Metrovick plus others that have yellow parts and reddish tones for lower extremities) has alternative colouring, then why is that an issue? :wink:

1. The only train I used yellow in was the MTAB Dm3, as it contained that many colors, that I needed that yellow. I used both company colors and black. The railings which were yellow in RL, I kept yellow, as an exception. The Metrovick was an already exisiting sprite, which indeed contains yellow, and I'm not too happy without it.

2. IMO changing it for your sprites isn't really necessary, since you already seem to have used a grey and both company colors.

3. One of your _ views (topright) seems to have a roof different than the others.

4. Thanks for your submission.
Ameecher wrote:But it's representing a British train that have to have yellow fronts.
The 2ccSet isn't British though. Instead of using yellows like the original TT vehicles did, we use greys next to 2cc. We do this with every train, regardless of the rules in a specific country. The set includes a Dutch EMU which is completely yellow IRL, since we got the same rule here. Though, the entire train has been drawn in 2cc, including the front.

* Introduction year: 1995
* Speed: 100mph (160km/h)
* TE: unknown (power output for a 4 coach train: 1256kW)
