But that doesn't add to realism since I never seen tickets for standing passengers. Or my knowledge of foreign trains is limited. :P
I only know anything about Finnish rail transport, but here they used to sell standing up tickets. This was before we started using the new intercity trains we're using now, so it's some years back. I'm told these tickets were priced almost the same as sitting down tickets so I'm guessing it was just a way for the state-owned rail transport company to make extra money off overbooked trains in rush hours.

In Poland you buy ticket and place reservation separately. People seldom bother to make reservation on normal trains, but on express and IC trains it is mandatory. Once, I had actually to buy place reservation, which stated: 'reservation without place'.

you can still buy a travel ticket without sitting place reservation (so, not really standing and sitting tickets. :) ) and this happens quite often when:
A) you traveling in commuter line. (no numbered places. examples: Helsinki Central - Helsinki Pasila, Kotka Central - Kouvola Central)
B) the station or stop does not have self service ticket machine or ticket office. (for example, in Kotka there's 6 stops or stations and only one has ticket machine and rest are just stops.) In this case you buy ticket from conductor, which cannot sell you more than travel ticket, even if you are traveling some parts of the trip in InterCity or Pendolino trains.)
C) the train has all sitting places reserved, you can still buy just travel ticket and hope to find some place that is left empty.

here is a new version, it contains a new chimera (from the opengfx project) with passanger/mail/goods/armor livery overrides, plus a double decker. looks slightly wierd atm, because i need to figure out how to use callbacks or something to create a "sloped" wagon.
