I can't build any vehicles at all.

Maybe I'm just doing this wrong, but when I start a computer generated game, I wait for a subsidy, then I build a road and bus stops, then I try to build a bus, but I can't. I've tried changing the date, it doesn't help. I'm really not sure what I'm doing though, because I just got this game. Oh yeah, the same goes for planes, trains, and ships too.

You're not explaining yourself very thoroughly.

First of all, are you using TTDP or OTTD?

You also have to actually build a depot, where you then can build the vehicles.

Yeah, I figured it out eventually, but I feel retarded now.

I'm using OTTD, BTW, and I still haven't figured out how to make planes or helicopters yet.

To build aircraft you need to click on the hangar, the building in on the left of the airports and then do it like buses and trains.

I'm having this problem, but I HAVE built a depot. I'm very, very new to this, so I'm following the TTD manual's little tutorials, and I've done everything up to "build vehicles" - but when I click the "New Vehicle" button, the list is empty. I built the road, 1 depot, and 2 bus stations, then click on the Depot, and then click "New Vehicles." What am I missing?

Heh. I juuuuuuuuuuuust right this second had that thought and sure enough, I can build them at 1950. Sorry for being an utter newbie there.

But, that strikes another question: what CAN I do in 1928, since it's allowed?

Well you will need to download some graphic sets that contain vehicles that are available before 1950, there are a lot of good ones around. Try GRFCrawler.
