Suggestion about grf parameters.

Discuss, get help with, or post new graphics for TTDPatch and OpenTTD, using the NewGRF system, here. Graphics for plain TTD also acceptable here.

Suggestion about grf parameters.

Post by gkirilov »

I am posting this here since the most of the grf coders read this part.
It would be nice to have the grf parameters described in the in-game menu (in the case of OTTD - the NewGRF config menu). This is the place where usually the artists&coders are written.
So if you manage to just add the parameters' description in there for all future sets it would be really handy.

p.s. I know that all parameters for all sets are described in the readme files that come with them but having the description in-game is better.

I hooked up my accelerator to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.
Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you take the wall with you. Spoilers and bodykits are how much of the wall you take with you. Rollcages and windownets are how much of a mess you leave on the wall.

Not to dismiss your idea, I think it's good, but you can't change the parameters in game, can you?

You can in Open, Dave.

Usually, the number and options for the parameters are too large to fit in a reasonable space, not to mention that formatting in the GRF Status Window is a royal PITA, even when it is possible. Changing the font, for example, is likely to mess up any formatting attempts. Also, READMEs can be translated. Action 8s, for all practical purposes, cannot.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

I have to second that, there's barely enough place to put the copyright info there, I can't imagine trying to fit the docs for all the parameters in any sensible way.
The inability to change the parameters while TTD is running would make it a rather pointless excercise anyway.

Darn! Now I'm going to have to read the readme files.
Just kidding. I do read them.
Also, after checking the readme files for any parameters, I add a short comment to my newgrf.cfg describing the parameters so that if I want to change something quickly, I don't have to chase down the readme.

That's only true for The Patch. In OpenTTD I have succesfully changed some parameters of the TTRS set during a game, and it worked like a charm. Not even a game reload needed.

You may not have noticed it, but I never mentioned anything about that particular game. Either way, thank you for pointing out the obvious.

Now if you could please explain how that:
a) makes more space for the copyright text
b) allows action 8 to be translated
c) justifies making the TTD and OTTD version of the GRF differ in yet another way

Also, explain what is so hard about Alt-TABbing (or whatever other equivalent your OS may use) to the README when you need to refer to the documentation. I honestly find it hard to believe that you have to fiddle around with the parameters frequently enough to make it a hassle.
