US Set Development Thread

We don't support OTTD, we expect OTTD to support Patch-based GRFs. If you can replicate the bug using ordinary TTD Patch, then please post it so we can debug that.
If you are interested in learning NFO, it would be great to have another coder on the project, as Oracle seems to have vanished into the whirl of university life. However, AFAIK you'd really need to be using TTD Patch for testing purposes, not OTTD, because they are not quite the same.

Oh, it would be easy for me to do. But I feel that it goes against the spirit of the USSet.ma5owat wrote:OK I will see if I can learn NFO, just figured that it would be a fairly easy change to make when you find the problem.
And what krtaylor said about OpenTTD support. If it doesn't work properly in Open, it's your fault, not ours.
There are a few people for whom the above statement does not apply, but that's because they don't report "It doesn't work in Open". Instead they report "I think sprite $NUM is broken, because it does $BAR, but I expected a sprite that does $FOO."
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

It seems like I have a lot of learning to do to learn about sprites, etc. I've only started playing TTD again for the last week and a half (I played the orginal about 10 years ago). I do my best to give detail errors and try to work out the problem as best that I can.
I know this wasn't listed under supported GRF in the OTTD wiki, although I read a post that Owen made saying OTTD had permission to use this set. I figured from that post that some people might be working on getting it to work all the way with OTTD.
Anyways I'll see if I can learn and understand NFO and GRFs and try to debug the problems it has with OTTD if possible.

I have also discovered that the Sunset is documented as being unable to carry valuables cars, but the code permits this. Should I fix this too?

Are there valuables cars that match the Sunset livery? Or we could use the mail ones. I suppose it would make sense for the Sunset to be able to carry valuables, they aren't too heavy are they? Thoughts?

There are not. The Sunset-liveried mail cars have an eagle on them, which seems wrong for valuables. I might be able to add sprites for valuables (probably mail wagon but without the eagle) , but that would take a lot more deciphering of Oracle's code.
... or possibly just completely rewriting it. That would probably be easier.

Are you volunteering to recode the entire US set?
Or just the Sunset? Because, you know, there are loads of new sprites that haven't been coded yet, including some animated ones...

For now, just the Sunset. If the same vehicle-attaching bug exists for other non-freight engines, then I'll fix it there too, since that's an easy fix.

Who drew the Sunset?
There are 36 distinct mail van sprites. I can figure out what 20 of them are supposed to be used for, but the reasoning behind the other 16 is a mystery to me.
The only distinction is in the undercarriage of the _ views (see attached image). The upper set, and the left of the large images, are used if bit 5 of parameter 0 is clear, but the four sprites used when the bogies are shared on both ends of the car are not changed to match.
I'm inclined to just remove the set of mail vans corresponding to the left large image, but I want to clear that with the powers that be first.

According to my notes, it was drawn by uzurpator, and adjusted by mnorman. I haven't seen much of either of them in recent times, but you could try PMing uzurpator.

Sorry work has been keeping me way too busy lately, so progress has been slow. Here is another stab at one financial http://www.aviewoncities.com/img/boston/kveus122s.jpg
I need to adjust the number of windows and their height to match the established standards for TTDX. Rooftop towers and HVAC should pretty much be consistent with Zimlock's work and the existing TTDX towers. The front plaza is too small to match to real world conditions so it'll receive standard concrete to match the sidewalks. MUNI LRVs/MBTA Kinkis are WIP at the moment, along with the Federal Reserve Building, and I took pictures of MBTA bilevels on my way to work recently, but haven't started anything quite yet. I really hope the holiday here will allow me to catch up on these projects which have been lagging.

This is fixed in r7284 of OpenTTD. Thanks to Lakie for helping with this. Turns out the var 41 documentation is not quite right...DaleStan wrote:The first two passenger cars in train 2 and the first passenger car in train 3 are all incorrect. But I cannot reproduce this -- pass it off to your newgrf devs (peter1138, belugas, maedhros, mart3p, &c.), or provide a TTDPatch save and configs demonstrating the problem.ma5owat wrote:Also when 2 Bi-Levels are together they appear as seperate observation type, whereas when just one Bi-level car is attached it appears as the start of a connecting Bi-level instead of an observation type.

He's like, some kind of OpenTTD developer.
So is OTTD now working with the current version of the US set?

Here's one:
You are not given correct running costs when playing the US Set in OTTD. The early steam trains and the later futuristic trains (such as the Sunset) have running costs per year almost equal to their buying price. In OTTD, however, the costs are much lower, which means that you'll get less of a challenge.
It depends on the map and your industry/town locations, but it's quite possible to reach Tycoon status within 10 years of starting the game.

Does the OTTD developer group know about this and consider it to be a bug worth fixing?
