busyest airport \ train station

Post by Firestar »

Here's a question for you what is the busyest airport/ trains station you have had, the current game I'm on has a station with 60 trains running from it, it's a 10 track station with very few delays.

I think my busiest has about ten trains, visiting four platforms. Since they're all very local, this is busier than it sounds - three platforms are occupied much of the time.

Total number of trains isn't a good measure, especially if they're very long distance trains. Get a watch out and count the number of arrivals over a minute, and you've probably got a better reckoning of busy-ness.

Well I once made this, but I unfortunately got bored of the game before I got round to actually having any trains use it. I guess it could be classed as one of the least busy stations though :P

This is a screen shot of my busyest station, notice the trains at the back of the station all entering at the same time, boy I just love those path based signals.[/img]

the mine biggest and crowded station was like the firestar's one, i can't take screenshots because i used magic bridges and the savegame is not compatible
mine had two four tracks mainlines at the ends (perpendicular, so you should know how much work to make a station entrance), 4 service line in one side and the station itself was 30 tracks wide and 15 tiles long

the entire entrance and exit was full of load balancers in less space as possible as i used magicbridges

edit: i found this old savegame on my pendrive (where i have one version of the game with magic bridges, but not the same version that was in the trunk) but is before the maglev conversion and is smaller and tidy than the other version (which i can't open)

How busy a station is depends on what type of rail is used and how long the trains are. I have a 20 tiles wide station which is full almost all the time. But since its 12 tiles long (as is the trains) it takes a loong time to unload. Its monorail and gets 30-35 trains a month. Each station handles 2 trains/month at the most.

Another station is maglev and only 5 tiles long, 32 wide. Each station have a max capacity of 5 trains a month and it gets a total of around 70-80 trains each month.
Those two stations gets a very smooth and regulated flow of traffic, in opposite to my passanger network which has its tops and downs.

But the most visited passenger-stations are around 6-10 tiles wide to handle the more sporradic flow. Some Ro-Ro some 2in-2out on the same side.
The Train counter is really nice. I like statistics and it's convenient to see which lines are used the most so i can redirect trains if it gets to crowded, or to count how many trains a station gets.

I like this station, totally caotic:

The entrance is build over a mainline and the trains pickup cargo transferred by feeder-trains.

My busiest station was a 4 platform passanger station at a 15000+ population town. Was during an ultra-multiplayer game with a friend of me. That station was connected with an airport, creating one station, and about 50 Yate haugans were using that airport. Boy, I was happy with that metropolian airport  The average amount of flying airplanes was about 20. Unfortunately, I can't find the saved game  Hope my friend still has it.. Will ask him soon ;)

EDIT: YAY! Tycoon! :D

Central Power

Post by cdosr »

In my current game (512 x 512) here's the central power station.

146 incoming (so far) to a 21 x 16 station. It's just about time to convert the whole thing over to monorail (or to build a sawmill ;-)

Hi there.

Can you please post the save game as well? I would like to have a closer look at the signal blocks at the entrance and the exit of the station as I am still looking for a good high performance layout. If you don't want to post the save game in public please send me a private message.

Kind regards.

There are times when JPG is useful, TTD screenshots is not one of them. Please use PNG instead.

He's the current save game. I ran it ahead a few years and converted everything to monorail but the signaling is the same.

When I stopped using PBS, I had to revisit the entrance layouts. This game is an experiment in two things, better entrace and a mega junction (one at each end of the map). I'm still not happy with the entrance.

This is all done with 0.4.8 with these newgrf's.

Thanks......

But not that station, the main power station I posted previously, the one with 146 trains going to it.

Frankly, I wasn't too concerned about the various pickup stations, the arrival rate there is very low. It's the central station I was playing with.

That said, while your changes make it a bit better, 3 comments:

1) you lost my depot where I was doing the train upgrades
2) you've got a sharp left turn off the main line, slowing the train
3) the "up and over" bridge slows the mainline traffic, better to have the traffic going to the station go "down and under".

I like your game! Nice and tidy. I've been looking for the "priority-line-signaling". Where main lines have higher priority, your where nicely done.

Thanks. I can't take credit for the priority line signaling. I found a reference in this forum that took me to http://openttdcoop.ppcis.org/wiki/index ... Priorities which explained it nicely.

Oké, I got the point.

1) You can put the depot back in place wherever you want;
2) I disabled in my game this option, so I take your remark;
3) See "2".

I tested your game and you have a good, but complex layout for entering the main station. I was so free  to modify it (see screenshot). I put the modification in the save file for downloading. In my way I tried to make it less complex. I tested both versions and for some years and in both versions there were no traffic jams. Because I stopped the game and made modifications there is at the start of this version a small jam for the first 4 moths.

Happy playing... :)

I downloaded your "improvement". Yes, there's no "bottleneck" at the station proper, trains are backed up on the main line from one end of the map to the other after only a few months (see screenshot of "where the trains are map"). Simple designs only move the problem elsewhere. Thanks but I'm tring to build something that will actually handle the arrival flow.
