On ECS and other graphic sets

Post by G4 »

This is both a problem and a request. I recently tried ECS (Extended Cargo Set) and liked it a lot. The problem is that most sets do not have railroad wagons to carry at least 4 of the new cargos, and this is also true for NewShips as well. This causes problems for me and (less importantly) massive problems for the AI. If there is any chance of resolving this problem, I (and possibly many others) would be grateful.
P.S. The sets I have problems with are USset, Renewed Tropic, ChekhSet, possibly the standart wagons and NewShips.

Next versions of DB Set and NewShips will provide full ECS support incl. cargo graphics.

Michael - will your next version of NewShips also be compatible with the original industries too?

I don't know Michael's plans, but still, I can't see any reason why the new DBSet and NewShips would be incompatible with the default industries.

If a vehicle set is coded correctly, it can be totally unaware of industry and cargo sets loaded. He already has graphics for the existing cargoes, so dropping those would be unreasonable. A properly coded vehicle set doesn't need to know whether WOOD comes from old-style forests or George-style forests, as long as it's labeled WOOD. Similarly, just because a vehicle set can carry potash, it won't get incompatible with savegames that have no potash.

There are two issues here.

1. Many sets predate ECS and were designed before the ECS concept came along. Some authors such as Michael Blunck are addressing this by doing revisions. The issue here is that with the size of some of the sets, revision to support a new feature such as ECS can be quite labour intensive and requires a high level of motivation on the part of the author.

2. Sets designed after the release of ECS that do not support ECS do so as a concious choice of the author for whatever reasons they may have.

If one wants to use ECS one will simply have to look for a set that was either designed or revised after the availability of ECS and that was specificaly designed to accomodate ECS. Check for sets that advertise and promote themselves as supporting ECS.

Basically that's why I wrote that this is also a request for the set teams. I'm not sure that the set developers say if their sets ARE compatible.

Michael, thanks a lot, I admire your work. By the way, where's George? I haven't seen his messages for some time even on the Russian forums...

G4, have you tried the updated US version ? For me, with only some new ECS industries, it is working. With the old one I had problems, too.

ah.. come on.. UK renewal train set supports ECS (somehow).
not 100%, but almost all cargoes can be transported with wagons of UK set (atleast railway wagons).

LV4 and Plain set 1.5 supports ECS.

what else?.. ah.. New ships -- everything except wool and oil seeds can also be transported with ships (while model Austin&Pickersgill GCV is available).

p.s.
they say next release of USA train set will support ECS...

The next version of the US trainset may be a while, though, as Oracle the coder has been very busy in Real Life and rarely is here.

I don't know if the test versions of the Japanset and Spanish set are ECS compatible, but if someone would like to test them and let me know, I'll pass it along.

Err... Do you think water is transported in ships anywhere in the world? If you have a river for the ship, you already have sweet water. OTOH, if you transport it across a sea, it's probably too far to be worth it.

Serbian rail set will have support for ECS. Now I'm working on last Hotfixes (little more things to adjust: some liveries and wagons speeds), and then I'll finish ECS support.
And LV4 have support for ECS.

Speaking of LV, it seems that they aren't aligned with any of the tram sets that I've seen :(...

They are.
You just must load LV set before tram sets compatible with LVs.
Compatible tram sets with LVs are German, Czech and Serbian (you can even use Czech and Serbian tram sets together, because they are also compatible to each other).

You're right.
You can use all 3 sets together with LVs and have 19 trams during game! :D
