Here the longer-distance and suburban buses have paying service which is operated by Volan... they open the first door normally, and only open the second if someone wanna leave the bus at the busstop... so the first of those is the entrance, the others (2nd, 3rd, 4th) are exits... BUT in inner city lines, they open all doors, and there's ticket validating thing, some companies have automated ticket validating: you stick the ticket and it print the actual date and time to it, so it's validated. But some have mechanical, where a 3x3 hole making stuff pierce the ticket.

And here buses don't have emergency door normally... only a non-openable window which has a window-breaker "hammer" which is designed to easily crach the glass.

Yes, the window thing is here in Britain too.

Lets be honest, you don't need emergency exit doors if you have three or four doors on the bus. :D

most trains have window hammers too, but they'd be pretty useless on the top deck of a burning double decker

I'd still jump if it was burning. It's only about 12 feet.

The Pendolino has a special "Claw"... you smash a small hole with one side and then "tear" a hole in the window with the other. Interesting design that.

I think they need these hammers, because after a crash the bus may lie on the door-side.

I know, but I was pointing out that an emergency exit-door on a 3 or 4 doored bus is un-necessary. The windows are still needed though.

Most British buses have an emergency exit at the back on the opposite side to the normal door. Then there's a breakable back window, and an emergency window halfway down.

Unfortunately, our buses don't have emergency door, only a few rare midibus, which has 1 automated door, or the double-decker luxury coaches...

But some of the export variant of Ikaruses have those...

Like this Ikarus 412 low-floor bus. This type is running in Budapest, Hungary's capitol too (those have 3 doors, and no emergency exit).

Ikarus 268 (it was 244 but they modified the type number)
It is 11 meters long variant of 256.42 and 246. The 246 is a city bus, 256.42's successor is C56, a suburban/short-distance coach.

There is only 1(!) of 268, and 1(!) of 246, but many Volan use many C56, some Volan use 256.42, it is same as C56, but with 200 series front and rear panel.

The 268 was mede for tropical climate, i bet it is developed for South-China, that's why it has darkened windows, which protect passengers from heat, and enhanced engine heating.

Ikarus C56 (C means "Classic")

Ikarus 256.44
It is 11 meters long, like Ikarus 268 (which was 244 when it was prototype), unlike 256.42, C56 and 246, these are 12 meters long.

11 meters long buses have d-w-w-d-w-w
on the non-door side, 5 windows

12 meters long buses have d-w-w-w-d-w-w
on the non-window side, 6 windows

*note: d = door, W = window on the door-side of the bus

Ha! 78 is line going near me! In Belgrade, of course.
On some old Ikarbus buses there was other emergency system: some glasses had rod, and when you pull it, glass was dissasembled from bus. That system is abandoned now AFAIK.

I think that some old buses from other countries have similar stuff... you pull a rod, which pull a wire, what makes the window's glass to fall out.

Sorry, i haven't find a photo of it :(

____,___
|..... ^ ...|
|..... |.....|
|______|

*note: _ and | are the window's rubber isolation, what keeps the window at its place, if you pull the "," what is a rod, it pull the wire, and it comes out under the rubber isolation, so if you only touch(!) the window, it will fell off from its place, and crash on the road or sidewalk...

But in my country, many city liner buses don't have the window breaking hammers, because idiot teens steal it, or break the window just for fun... this pull-the-wire stuff is dangerous too, if someone "open" it when someone or something is under that window...

Yes, that's exact patent for emergency glasses like used here.
And here is simillar situation with idiots who steals hammers. But now hammers are connected with short steel wire to chassis. I don't know how it can be used in case of emergency :? (and I really don't want to know).

Ikarus 256
This coach is an ancient one, probably this was a demonstration bus... this had manual(!) doors, and air conditioning, unlike most of them... in my county Ikarus 200-series don't have air conditioning, i think only export ones have that.

Image

Ikarus 280
This articulated bus runs in Samara, Russia and it looks very old. Russian liked that kind of doors, they ordered them with that kind of doors even in the year 2000!

Image

And the "new" Ikarus 280 in Moscow, they were made in the year 2000.
