Personally I use TTDpatch, but you aren't me.
I would sugguest trying both and finding the one suits you.

OTTD because I have no choice

I really want to play TTDPatch (PBS and better .GRF adaption) but I'm already really grateful to be able to play TTD on my Mac!

I play both, but once OTTD has near full grf support (and I figure out the nightlies

), I'll switch to that.

I just like the bigger maps and things like "clone train".

I find myself playing both. Maybe OpenTTD a bit more, due to the fact it feels wierd to have screen clicks and command prompts with TTDPatch.

I only use OpenTTD as I'm member of #openttdcoop nowadays and I do nothing else then coop, for which you need a stable network game, so OTTD is the way to go for me.
