lets please NOT debate the GUI design. lets just get the damn Icons A(which are done already) into the game official.

one step at a time.

the first step in getting any graphics of the 32bpp persuasion into the game is the icons.

The main critique of the icons are that they are too vague. I really think the Airport icon is just too poorly done as well as the following:
OpenTTD Wiki discussion page wrote:I am talking specifically about the Airport Icon and the Town directory icon. For the aiport icon, an airport tower was already an easily identifiable icon, but this new one looks too much like a road, and is way to vague at what it is. The windsock is not very helpful either, changing this to something more recognisable would make it able to remove the traffic light from the road icon too

The same with the Town directory icon. It also looks related to roads. A better icon would be a picture of a cityscape silhoette. <IP> 21:23, 19 Feb 2006 (CET)
I completely agree. --<IP> 13:22, 25 April 2006 (CEST)
- yes, I agree you should reedit especially these icons: Stations, Finance, Company Info (bub)
An airport terminal icon like the current one would be better, and more distinguishable. Having traffic lights over roads implies you can build traffic lights over roads.

What are the chances of using GTK or QT? Overkill, perhaps, but themable...

Despite being a huge GNOME person, I don't think those kind of toolkits make sense for games. Games often need a unique visual style and choosing one toolkit almost certainly kills a certain percentage your audience, as some won't install the other toolkit (for instance I have no QT on my machine).

It does, but that percentage is tiny. I don't have KDE installed, but I definitely do have QT. I'd be nuts not to. Google Earth requires it, for starters.

Nethack is available with both QT and GTK interfaces. Both are very cool, especially when the buttons match the rest of your desktop. FreeCiv, too. I don't believe that any game needs a unique visual style for its interface. I think that games with such an interface had it developed out of abdolute necessity rather than not choosing other options for style reasons. TT was a DOS game first, and Sawyer had to implement a windowing system because there simply wasn't one.

Personally, I'd love OpenTTD to be completely modal with its windows. I'd like to be able to minimise the main game viewport, leaving perhaps just an important train and the chat window (Oh, how we need that) on screen with all my "real" applications.

I agree, this is one of the most important features I think a desktop game needs these days! I have two monitors and i've love to be able to drag my mini map windows and various others onto my other screen, whilst keeping the game running only on my main screen :D

it would make me happy.

Of course it's a lot of work, as the old graphic-windows system would have to be completely replaced by actual windows.

Could it be done? Would it work on all OS/s? Including the PSP Port version - Maybe not :(

I disagree. Sure, go for having OTTD's windows in "real" windows if you want, but only when in windowed mode.

I always play in fullscreen, and it would look horrible to have "real" windows on top of a fullscreen game.

I like the current system. Maybe make optional as i would prefer to keep it as it is.

well i say 'put them in' and then fix them..... some temporary something is going to be needed everywhere.

there seem to be to many reasons not to move forward in some/any way here (here meaning 32bpp).

it appears that the icons aren't on the server anymore. This is one of the reasons why we prefer that people upload the images instead of linking to them. I hope this will get fixed, so I can see those icons as well

The icons are still where they have always been: here

The airport icon was changed to a runway to form some sort of consistancy with the other transport construction icons. The old icon I don't really looks like a control tower but we know it is because of the plane icon and the fact that we've been using it in the game for so long. So with any change I believe there will be resistance until people get used to them. If people are still adamant about the icons then I can have a look at them again and see if I can make some changes. But thank you for your feedback.

Regarding the UI's I'd mocked up, they are work in progress. And in no way meant to be replacements into the game at this stage.

I can see them on your homepage, but not when using the links provided in the first post.
I will have to say that this is nice graphics and a step in the right direction, but as you mentioned yourself, not complete. For instance I think the airport button lacks a plane or a shadow from a plane or something similar to make it clear what it is. I can see what you think with this icon, but specially to new players, it would be best if it is a bit more clear. To people, who knows the game very well, the buttons might as well be labeled A,B,C... and we would still figure it out

Yes, as Bjarni said, an outline of a plane would scream "this is the airport icon". If the airport icon is changed, the road icon could be reverted to just a road tile, which is a basic icon to all.

That reminds me of http://www.daskeyboard.com/

Maybe someday there will be a mod for the hardcore OpenTTD players using only black buttons.
This way you can impress your girlfriend.

Wow, that's an awesome keyboard
If I ever find myself a keyboard short, this is a candidate for a new one. It's cool and durable and as a bonus (not mentioned on their homepage), it will give you your computer completely to yourself as the rest of the family can't figure out how to type passwords anymore

black or blank, the idea is the same.It should actually not be that tricky to make a newgrf, that replaces all the buttons with blank ones. It would actually be interesting to try some day :D

well does a windsock not do that?

perhaps a radar dish would be a better option? i personally think the current logo (that joed designed) is 100% perfect.

i think we can debate it more once the icons are in the game, i don't think small things (since more issues are bound to be noticed by many players once playing, things that just don't gel etc...) should hold up sticking them in the nightlies.

heck aren't nightlies there for testing unstable and unfinalised things? why not with graphics also?

Wouldn't you need the 32bpp engine first?

Besides, one of the game's developers has requested the airport icon be changed to something more recognisable.

yes we would need a 32bpp engine..... but i don't know anything about what is going on here. it was 6 months ago that i remember using a 32bpp graphics version.... so i don't know what is happening.

this is what i am trying to find out. what is happening with the 32bpp engine. the graphics seem to be there waiting.

No reason to write the same ETA (or whatever we should call it) more than once
