Early (1920-1935) road vehicles?

Post by metalangel »

I've searched and searched and searched but haven't been able to find anything that adds road vehicles that'll be available to build if you start your game in 1920.

Do any exist? Or should my forthcoming US Set game (with Longvehicles, natch) be more a case of what really happened, ie: rails being pulled up and replaced by big trucks in the 1960s and 70s?

What you want is Pikkabird’s UK Bus Set. It has busses and some trucks available from 1920.

Brilliant. Thanks for that... I knew there were model T vehicles out there but just you try searching for that!

I couldn't get it to work, at least

TTO had such trains and vehicles. But in TTD these were cleared to make room for the new future vehicles and maglevs.

Yes, wasn't that because of the limit of vehicle slots? This is no problem for OTTD right? I have no indepth information about this so does anyone know?

There is a maximum limit of the amount of DIFFERENT vehicle types you can have, this includes locomotives, road vehicles, carriages, ships and planes. This limit is 256 I guess, it seems most logical to me :).

Why is there actually a limit? I mean, why don't just patch a bigger limit?

Mr. X probaly mean limits of TTD IDs for vehicles. There is 116 IDs dedicated for trains, 88 IDs for road vehicles, 41 for planes and 11 for ships - see Wiki.
Are there same limits in OTTD?

That's what I mean, why can't you increase those ID limits?

Alas, those vehicles don't like George's lovely LVs. So, I reckon I'll just live without road vehicles for the first 10-15 years or so.

I was talking about those ;).

Because GRFs won't use those IDs anyway, they specify which vehicle has which ID and since TTDP probably won't increase them it wouldn't make sense to do it in OTTD too.

But you can use more IDs to allow multiple GRF sets to be active at a time. That is, you can allow multiple vehicles with the same ID, just by adding more numbers to the ID. For instance, if you are going to use 16 bit IDs, then you may use the lowest byte for the original IDs and the highest bit for something which you may call "vehicle set ID". Suppose ID 0x1B is a certain vehicle type, then loading a GRF set (which includes a new vehicle 0x1B) may, instead of overloading the vehicle 0x1B, add a vehicle 0x011B, next to the original vehicle 0x001B. This system would be pretty compatible with the old (=existing) situation, as you can still have the old vehicle limits. But you can have more vehicle types. One can even make sets with more vehicles than the current limits allow, just by using multiple GRF files (with different GRF IDs).
There are some issues that may have to be looked at. For instance, when loading a savegame, changing the order in which the GRF files are loaded would break this numbering. A way to solve this, may be to include data to the savegame that links a GRF ID to the series number of the savegame (i.e. the highest byte of the 2 byte vehicle ID).
