Belgian Road Vehicles...

Post by IIyama »

Hello everybody...

even if the BE train set disappeared, I thought about doing a BE Road set...

And even if it takes long before getting it working, it would be nice...

I just tested one of the views for the Van Hool A600 and if it looks good, I go on...

If not... hmmm... Let's say I'll try to improve ;)

Hmm, does it have doors on both sides (left AND right?)

Otherwise it's not bad for a start. You might want to check the proportions (you can either use TTD's original ones or George's ones) and it could use some extra shading (surfaces are a bit too plain, being painted with only one colour). But it's good for your first drawing, keep trying :)

yup indeed it has side doors only on left side...

I should have taken more care... :/

I also noticed for the scale and I'll resize it and render it in 8bit (because resizing should perhaps add colours "out" of the 8bit range)...

As I can see, you do not follow TTD's scale. Let me suggest you to use 3.3px/m scale

Is it better like that?

That's better.
But it is still a bit flat, especially in the horizontal view. It looks like 2-d, while on TTD you see vehicles from the above. Try to make the roof "taller", to give a deeper look to your bus. I think the roof should be at least one pixel "deeper", if not two.

You're getting the proportions right and this is already an improvement. Whenever you're ready, focus on the shading. Light comes from the right, so the sides facing that direction should be brighter. I know they somewhat already are (like in the diagonal view, where the back is correctly darker than the side), but if you managed to shade a bit more the surface it'd be perfect.

Keep at it!

As I can see, you are drawing this bus. I suggest to make the following changes:
Correct bus length
Correct height
Correct bus front part
Correct width

Ok!!! Now I see exactly what I've got to change...

I just didn't use correctly your scale "tool"... (it was a bit late and my comprehension skill was just above nothing ;))

I'll redraw something more accurate for this evening...

Also, for the vertical view, I really have a difficulty to render a 3D-like sprite. If someone has an idea on how I could do because I really don't see "howto".

Thanks a lot for your help!!! :)

hmmm... also, for the scaling issue, this bus is 11.9meter long... so 12.9 should be a bit 'strange' because of its wheel base...

Just to be accurate : should it really fit in the 12.9meter template? Or may I do it just a bit shorter?

You should not fit it exactly to 12m template. But this template is designed for 11-13m long buses. In your case it means, that a bus should be 3 pixels shorter, than a template, in horizontal view, and 2 pixels shorter in diagonal view

Absolutely right, it should be shorter. I made a 12m template for you

What do you mean with "render"? I supposed you've drawn it
IIyama wrote:ok. Just a new try to see if I understood rightly
Well, not exactly. The top line with number 4 means 4m high buses, while number 3 means 3m. That's why the buss looks too high now. Also it should be shorten. Also the wheels should be 3px wide in diagonal views.

Reminder. Do not start the second vehicle unless first one is perfect

Yeah i appoligize that the Be train set has disappeared IIyama, but to do that job alone, its a work of years i think.

Also, writing the correct sprites was a big pain in the ass for me.
I noticed that i used a wrong scale for some trains, and then i decided to stop the coding temporary, untill some helper would show up :)

The coding may have been disabled, its not 'dead' as in 'dead'.
The project can always be reopened, when i miss it again so much :)

If you're feeling blue, why not smurf along with me?
A Belgium trainset would be a greatfull toy!

>> George :

I drew it indeed... when I mean "render", I mean "doing graphics that looks like 3D" ;)

So OK, I also got it for height scale. Damn... I guess it's the first one that's the hardest to draw (?)

>> Beesty :

BE set would have looked sooo sooo nice :)

BTW, if I can help you later (when I'll be old and skilled :)), it would be a possibility to bring you a bit of help. But first : my first draw :P

Oh. I see

Well, no. You have to draw 20-30 objects to "catch" the style ;). But if you'll not be patient in the beginning, you will not get it at all.

OK then...

Now as I understood (in the end  ) how to manage the scales, I'll try to redraw it for this evening and see what I can still improve (I know there will be a lot to improve yet ;)).

I've tried this way.

I hope it's now a bit better (?!?)

I tried also adding shadings... but it seems to be somewhat hard to see it properly with so few pixels ;)

Yes, but the height looks wrong. It looks like you've used the top row line, that is for 4m high vehicles, while this bus seems to be 3m high.

That is what SKILL means :) Only lots of practice would help you get feeling of correct colour even for a single pixel :) Keep working

So I'll re-try a graphic this evening with 1 less pixel in height.

Also I'll try to make a "front" view to see what I may improve to get a "no-flat" effect...

Thanks to all for your help!
