Have you considered building bypasses to divert some of the traffic instead?
We did. We called it the third line.

Let me explain the concept of a bypass, in pictures..

here we have a 3-track mainline, and a bypass, however the 3rd track in the mainline is not a bypass, its a continiuation of the mainline.

Heres a 2 track mainline, with a bypass, as you can see the bypass doesn't continiue along the mainline. The bypass lets trains from Point G To Point D from wich it can continiue to point C, instead of having them go through Point A & B first.

All the traffic on the mainline pictured in my post was going to the same place. A by-pass as you have suggested wouldn't solve the problem.

That post was simply meant to explain the concept of a bypass to you. :)
Not to offer a solution, since i can't see the whole map of the network you posted anyways, so i can't devise any effective solutions that would apply to the network.

Ebay ewas one of the first maps i set up, and its been running a loing time. If i work out the rate at which a loan increases, then i could pribably work out how long its been running...

The next time i'm really bored, i might get aeround to that.

To answer your question Darkvater, i beleive it might well have been running that long - or longer, i used to just leave it on for days on end, and i've had it more or less seince i started using OTTD - about version 0.3.6 or something... don't know exactly when but it must be at least a year ago now

the 4000 years is just a rough estimate - based on what i think inflation does.

you could sort of call the 3rd line a bypass as it starts at a hub then ends at the town dropoff just down the line so it sort of is if you rhink about it

Ugh, that choice of colours was really bad, hardly visible :|

Fragothic: Please do screenshots in PNG. Much better quality than JPG and not even bigger. Can you post the savegame or some PNG screenshots? I think some of those might be great for the screenshot section of the website.

Also people: if you have great shots showing off cool functionality or just really nice scenery, newgrf'd or not, post it. Just not too big (sized) pictures; focus on the important part :)

well if the coop once managed to cope with a two track mainline (not sure might be more) with 1000 trains i would suspect its not *that* necessary

What grf are u using for the bridges? (with link if possible)
Fragothic
Are you using the original trains .. or this is some grfset?
OTTDCoop NewGRF Pack|Different sets of GRFs for TTDPatch (some of them work in OTTD) - 1|- 2|GRF sets for OTTD|OTTD nightly

I hooked up my accelerator to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.
Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you take the wall with you. Spoilers and bodykits are how much of the wall you take with you. Rollcages and windownets are how much of a mess you leave on the wall.

PikkaBird's viaduct. It replaces the wooden bridge, and has an 80mph speed limit.

Look at the speed of this bus. Note: Yes, the units are really m/s. That is faster than any of the conventional trains (which I have tested using the parallel railroad track). I gave the bus a 3600 hp engine to accomplish this - which is in fact way too much; it is only limited to 80 m/s because I set that value as an absolute maximum.

(Unfortunately, the hack to make these speeds possible makes the program unstable. It crashes frequently (except when in debug mode) when road vehicles go this fast.)
Attachments
This bus is driving 80...<br />... m/s. Which is equivalent to 288 km/h or 179 mph.

My "mess".

The strangest and most complicated junction on my current network.

It started as two, two track mainlines merging into one two track main line, but traffic increased and additions were constantly made. It now looks like this with even more lines coming into it.

Amazingly, it works!

note:This is 4 images merged into one. sorry about the size.
