Red*Star wrote:However, don't be so severe, it is a WIP. I'm working on it, cause you are right - it doesn't fit very well in the OTTD environment. (An oil rig is not so easy to create, even WITH original photos.)
The main problem is that it looks like the photo. Such objects do not fit in the TTD enviroment, but also do not fit with new graphics too, because they are drawn to fit in the TTD enviroment. That's why you should use photos as prototypes, but not as graphics base. You should "rebuild" graphics from zero to make it fit. The only thing you should take from original photos is proportions. Make a new try. Try to do it as Zimmlock does (look the progress of old storage building). Or look my tutorials. The samples are for vehicles, but the same rules works for buildings as well. Tru to draw main cubes and then to add details on them. Post step by step progress here for critics and you'll make excelent oil rig. Now proportions are totaly wrong.

Ok ok, you're right. It does not harmonize with the othr gfx. Because I still have a forest to cut ;), I will first do that, then I will continue with this sprite.
It was just a try, if I can integrate some photo elements to make its look cooler. Obviously that's not the case.
Although what George says is a good idea (start from scratch), I think I will work on the current version till it looks... it "feels" like TTD.
BTW: George, why are the proportions "totally wrong"? In original graphics the proportions of the rig were not worse.

@MeusH: I've mentioned that with the heliport - that is the reason why the sprite is not centered to the 4 water tiles ;).

@Graphite: Here's your faked-picture:

I've tried it. Fast impossible. You need the photo of the same angle, as in TTD world. It is only possible if you make a photo from the helicopter.

totally wrong for the TTD world. It has to be about 1.5-2 times bigger. And sorry for incorrect word. I meant not "proportions", but "dimentions" (size)

But the original oil rig hadn't had better dimensions. It just was more... big... erm... I mean, it used all of the 4 ground tiles space, my version uses approx. 2.5 tiles (maybe 1.5 tile at the base, but the base is smaller than the superstructure).

Also take a look at this picture. I don't know how big a lighthouse is exactly, but compared with the old oil rig it also doesn't fit, or does it?
The worst thing is the ship: If I scale the new oil rig just 1.2 times up (that's the right one) the ship looks like a shrimp cutter compared to it ;).

My impression is, that in TTD many things doesn't fit very well (look at the train cabs: They are too short compared with their height, the streets are as broad as a scyscraper etc.), so why should this oilrig?

As I can see at the picture, the bigger oil rig on the right fits much better. Also use MBs ships to compare, they a bit larger

Here's my next try... it's a little bit better - above all: bigger.

Say me if you like the colorful version more or the less saturated.

@George: But I still find that many things doesn't fit in TTD ;).

ot: Unfortunately I've posted a palette concerning question in the wiki - I should have known that nobody would read it there :)... Maybe someone of knows enough about the OTTD palette so that you can answer this http://wiki.openttd.org/index.php/Talk: ... eplacement question.

It is better now. But i think it should be more contrast and you could also add some details, that do not fit it size, but give nice illusions. For example add the fence around the helicopter landing place

Could you also post the photo, that you used as the sample?

I think there is very seldom a fence around the helicopter landing place - just google for "oilrig" and look at some sample oilrigs.

Why do you always want to have the original photo? ?(

New version & your photo.

I know, the tower looks still a little bit strange... because yet I didn't completely repainted it. Will be done, also the "more details request".

The progress is very good. The front part is much better now. Work more on the top and back-right parts

It was so small.
Maybe you can find a better one.

Ok, now the tower doesn't longer look so blurred.

Before you scream why the parapet around the helipad looks so flat - it isn't a parapet - I've got this form of "fence" or whatever it should be from the photo I've attached.

I recommend to use at least as 10 times bigger photos, than the object, you draw

Yes, it is better now. If you'll fix all the rig that way, it would be really cool

well, you can add some details, that are not represented in the photo, to your sprites to make them more TTD style

Looks better and better to me! A little bit more contrast could go a long way though. Also, I think the shadowing on the helipad is a little... glaring? If you get my meaning here. It almost looks spherical, or at least doesn't entirely fit my perception of how things in TTD are shaded. (Light angle, intensity, etc.)

But the progress is remarkable! The first version was so blurry that I was taken aback, but this is definitely getting there!

Only thing wrong is that the helipad looks like any landed helicopter would slide down and off the side. It doesn't seem to follow the isometric angle properly.

Yes, you're right - the first version looked criminal :D

About the helipad: Now it's better. I thought it would look cooler with the new gradient shading, but maybe I was blind or something.
It was not exactly isometric, I know - that was a result of a chance from the beginning. But that doesn't longer matter cause it's fixed - so it doesn't longer look like helicopters slides along an inclined plane to get lost in the deep deep ocean. ;)

So, and now it's time for the construction states, isn't it? *rolleyes*
