subways
thanks guys for the screenshots. got some from IRC as well.
here is my concept for subways.
unlike Sim-city i don't like the idea of an entire underground building system, i found it very hard to navigate. i think that most people will build subways on one or two levels anyway (faster for vehicles). so my method won't be an issue.
what i propose is a subway toggle on/off button on a menu somewhere, and an Up/down buttons. the slice will cut through the landscape leaving all below the level visable, and all above the level gone/ removed.
the advantage of which, is any rail network can go into a mountain and you can see it flawlessly, the outside stuff and the inside stuff, making connections easy. the stuff above could be made 50% transparent to help align catchment areas, or subway stations could be built on the surface (like sim city) then one looks underground.
things like signals, station GFX... can now be applied underground with this way of doing it, and they will look in place.
opinions coments?

could you make the hill they are going though bigger please.... like wider (not higher)
i am wanting to do a mockup of a new view mode for subways.
other than that its perfect....
oh infact could you make a hill with tunnels.... screenshot it. in the exact same location could you reduce the hill to 1 tile high then screenshot it again, so i can get a before and after shot, i will then fill in the subway underground.
thanks

Alltaken, your idea is perfect. Mockup 1 is much better than 3.
However, there are much more possibilities and warnings coming with this system:
+ Someone wants to go one level down with the tracks. So he lowers land inside the hill and makes track on the slope
- Someone wants to build a bridge inside a hill. Should it be possible?
+ Somoene wants to go one level uphill. He raises land. New tunnel enterances must be drawn and coded
What about water inside (under) a hill?
How about depots?
How about buildings?

Er... can you please explain that a bit more? I didn't got itMeusH wrote: + Someone wants to go one level down with the tracks. So he lowers land inside the hill and makes track on the slope
That would be hilarious! and pointless.- Someone wants to build a bridge inside a hill. Should it be possible?
This thread's purpose is (i think) to find ways to visualise the tunnels.

huh?+ Somoene wants to go one level uphill. He raises land. New tunnel enterances must be drawn and coded

Somebody (Celestar I think) made a patch that did this in the map array branch. I can't remember the keys for sure but I think it was Ctrl and the scroll wheel.

actually mockup-3 is the same as mockup one with another button pressed. this will allow you to position underground things in relation to things on the surface... you are trying to match up an underground track with a surface track for example..... it is [3] needed IMOMeusH wrote:Alltaken, your idea is perfect. you have new track types in subways, you have a UP and DOWN track type. like you would position a train depot, or a dragable one (if changing levels is done over two squares), this IMO is not a problem to do.However, there are much more possibilities and warnings coming with this system:
+ Someone wants to go one level down with the tracks. So he lowers land inside the hill and makes track on the slope

Bridge inside a tunnel, yes 100% possible IMO, however it will be a combo up/down piece. i.e. it will place an up or down section, then a straight section then an up or down section. this will not be a bridge but will function the same for getting over or under another track.
this is in the GFX forum.... what better place to discuss GFX sollutions to possible problemsNew tunnel enterances must be drawn and coded

we will need tunnel pieces that come out of the ground (going up/down) this will help heaps for tunneling under tracks LOL, either that or we just have the same GFX as now. we will need an internal tunnel entrance showing the other side of a tunnel entrance.
we will need a new tracktype or similar with the inside of the tunnel being a whole set of pieces..... infact we will need a good amount of stuff, so you are correct.
why will they be any different than how they are done now? this method is still tile based, and thus will be able to be done just the same as GFX now. there is nothing stoping buildings being inside the hills. your imagination will be able to imagine subway stations.... they will just be done like an Xcom base, cut out of the ground. What about water inside (under) a hill?
How about depots?
How about buildings?

See attachement 1. Fully flexible underground tracksStavrosG wrote:Er... can you please explain that a bit more? I didn't got itMeusH wrote: + Someone wants to go one level down with the tracks. So he lowers land inside the hill and makes track on the slope
That's right. This is why bridges should be prohibited in tunnels... Or... Underground world? lol. So, according to attachement 1, bridge shouldn't be allowed to be built thereStavrosG wrote:That would be hilarious! and pointless.- Someone wants to build a bridge inside a hill. It is if you can build on the tunnel entrance, like since recently can be done in TTDPatch, AFAIK.MeusH wrote:Wolf, sometimes your way is not good enough in certain sitiuations.

i was lazy too, my picture mean that a "hole in the plan" entrance is not so good like a little slope and a vertical entranceMeusH wrote:That's right, csuke. I was just lazy making that tunnel enterance.

now i try to draw it better with another paint program (i used paint to do that)
EDIT: here is it
