Graphic tip: Two track railroad on one tile
Would it be possible to have two track railroad on one tile when the new graphic engine is up? -It would save a lot of space in cities, and it would the be easyer (possible) to build stations inside cities. -This is espassially difficould when there are more then two players trying to build a railroad system inside a city at the same time...
I think yes, this will be possible:

Real life tracks have to be placed a certain distance from each other so as not to destroy the train's windows when they go past each other at high speeds. It'd be a neat way of making the route cost more for high-speed tracks, and cheaper for lower-speed, because double the real-estate is needed for high-speed tracks (I think we'd need double track bridges and tunnels too).

Yes, it would mean some rewriting to the pathfinder, but graphic-wise two trains can easily fit on one square. I would love to see this myself. Am not sure about not allowing trains to go very fast on a double track, mainly because of "breaking windows". Freight trains (usually) have no windows. Only thing I can think of is derailment but for that you would have to go incredibly fast.
Siggy not gonna work unless someone allows javascripting...

would also make trams possable. lights would probably have to go red if a road vehicle was on the line but before the next signal.

I saw two trams crashed on tight curve because of too fast movement.}T{Reme [Q_G] wrote:Yes, it would mean some rewriting to the pathfinder, but graphic-wise two trains can easily fit on one square. Of course, windows broke, but the plating got damaged, too.
So even if there were no windows, train would be damaged.
OpenTTD Solution: Breakdown chance of two trains (driving other directions on other lanes) that meet eachother at the tight curve should incerase.

I'd suggest using two way railways only for trams and perhaps metros. Not for ordinary railway track, it ruins the gameplay I think.

With Locomotion, it's not that hard to imagine.

I think we need to consider the idea of scale, here. If you're putting two tracks on one tile the question becomes, WHY are tiles so big? Tiles are supposed to be the granular unit in-game. If you can place one or two tracks on a tile, you're breaking the granularity down smaller. The question becomes not 'can we put two tracks on one tile' but 'why not make the tiles smaller?'
This is not to say that two-track tramways on one tile are a bad idea. But when you're placing mainline tracks 2-per-tile, the idea of a tile becomes diluted. I'd LOVE to see tramways.
This does bring up another issue, though. The scale in the game is very off. As the codebase becomes more and more powerful, along with larger map arrays, perhaps we should look at not making railways SMALLER, but making buildings LARGER.

I fully agree. maybe try and equal out the scale a bit!thetzar wrote:The scale in the game is very off. As the codebase becomes more and more powerful, along with larger map arrays, perhaps we should look at not making railways SMALLER, but making buildings LARGER.
I cant put a signature here, I dropped my pen
I've once thought something similar too, recently. Maps should be bigger, towns should be way bigger, station catchment area should be bigger, the space between the towns should be bigger, the amount of buildings you can demolish should be bigger*, the size of trains should be bigger, etc. This would make it more realistic.
