Where would Canada use maglev? Are they talking about it anywhere?

Do a Google on Canada Maglev ... the results surprised me.krtaylor wrote:Where would Canada use maglev? Are they talking about it anywhere?
The ideal location ... relatively level terraine, existing infrastructure, market ... would be the Ville de Québec - Windsor corridore ... however due to the need for acceleration ramps, airport connector services and local commuter services might not be as ideal as one would think although it would be ideal for allowing airports to be located more remotely from city cores ... eg Mirabel, which failed as a passenger terminal due to a lack of rapid mass transit into Montréal. Current trends in fuel costs should make Maglev and similar technologies significantly more attractive in the coming decades.

Well, the Arctic Renewal Set is "sort of" based on Canada/Pacific Northwest. Main reasons I included Maglev? It's cool, it's my set and aside from the DBSet, no other set uses it yet.
As far as the Windsor-QC Corridor... since the International was cancelled and there's really no major reason to visit Windsor (aside from Casino), I could see a QC-Toronto Maglev, but not sure about one to Windsor.
Hell, Aside from six 0-6-6-0's that were rebuilt to 2-10-0's and a couple small logging mallets on Vancouver Island, Canada never had any big Mallets either, so me adding the 2-8-8-2 alone takes it out of the exclusively "Canadian" domain.

Just say it's a "gameplay" set Dan, then you can get away with anythingDanMacK wrote:Hell, Aside from six 0-6-6-0's that were rebuilt to 2-10-0's and a couple small logging mallets on Vancouver Island, Canada never had any big Mallets either, so me adding the 2-8-8-2 alone takes it out of the exclusively "Canadian" domain.

It would make EXCELLENT sense if it continued to Detroit and Chicago, though.DanMacK wrote:As far as the Windsor-QC Corridor... since the International was cancelled and there's really no major reason to visit Windsor (aside from Casino), I could see a QC-Toronto Maglev, but not sure about one to Windsor.
Canada has no 2-8-8-2s? But it did all kinds of good heavy freight. What did they use IRL? Multiheading?DanMacK wrote:Hell, Aside from six 0-6-6-0's that were rebuilt to 2-10-0's and a couple small logging mallets on Vancouver Island, Canada never had any big Mallets either, so me adding the 2-8-8-2 alone takes it out of the exclusively "Canadian" domain.
Personally, I like massive multiheads, it's kind of cool. The Japanset will require this, since IRL the rails are all narrow-gauge AND fairly lightweight, so the engines must be small. A freight train of 8 (short) cars requires two locos, three if there are mountains. Electrification helps a good bit but that comes later, in the early years normally you hvae two leads and one pusher. I've got photos of Japanese steam trains with three leads and two pushers, and the trains don't look that long.

Biggest thing in Canada was 2-10-2's on CN and 2-10-4's on CP, so A LOT of Multiheading went on. Mikados were the freight staple up here regardless of location.

Why don't you want to keep it that way?

Because I wanted to base the ARS around the Pacific Northwest, not just Canada, hence the 2-8-8-2. The lack of articulated locos will be addressed in the Canadian Set.

I just found this trainset, and HOORAY!! A set featuring American locomotives that works (mostly) with OTTD! I was nearly heartbroken when I realized the USSet wouldn't work until they updated their NewGRF code, so I was very happy to find this.
But I was puzzled when I went to try and play a game with it. Is there a particular reason that all the cars are set to cost ten times what the locomotives do?

If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger locomotive and try again.
The ARS is more compatible with some builds than others.
Hackykid's 'Stuff' version seems to work best with it.

DanMacK's planning to add Iron Ore and Steel to the Arctic; so here are the relevant GRF files (Source is not particularly interesting, but has some more logical linefeeds.)
PikkaBird: Bits are 08 and 09 (Right where they belong) IDs are 0C (ore) and 0D (steel). Resource management and cargo classes are coded.
Note that this GRF files *only* adds the industries and the cargos; you may or may not actually be able to transport the cargos.
Personally, I'd suggest taking the meat of this GRF file and slapping it into the NARS GRF.

To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Dalestan, Thanks man!
Makes sense to add it to the NARS Grf. It'll also be for the Canset as well.
Will post ore cars and steel cars shortly.
