Create some modifications on the dbset.grf

Post by praenti »

Hi,

I need some help with some modifications I want to do in the dbset.grf.
I want to introduce there a monorail.

The problem I have, is that I used grfcodec and found the sprite where the "Transrapid 09" is located. But I don't see how this sprite is connected with the Action03 and where the Action00 is, which defines the technical data of this vehicle.

Are there any tools which can do that much more better in the Internet?

I don't think you are allowed to modify it without Michael Bluncks permission. Do you have it?

Not yet because it is for me personally :-).
I only will release this change with his permission!! (Had seen such problems too often with OpenSource-Software and GPL violation, even not with my GPL-software).

the GFX you are wanting o use are not part of GPL software.

copyright issues will exist rather strongly with GRF stuff and infact any change (even for personal use) is generally considered a violation.... but without much chance of getting caught.

hence why the new GFX will be under 1 of 2 licenses. (for user and artists safety of editing and distribution/ credit)

OK. Then it will be, as I thought before, only personal fun :-). Originally I didn't want to release that change, but I had to think about when you asked me if there's a permission of Michael.
It's more to learn about how making an own grf.

Private use should not be the problem here I hope. The copyright is important and has to be kept.

But the main problem is not solved, because my question is not answered yet. So let's get back to the main topic :D .

Hi,

better idea without any copyright issues!!!!!!
Is it possible to write an own grf where you can override previous settings from another grf (for example the dbset.grf)?

Idea is to put in the openttd.cfg this lines with this sequence
dbsetw.grf
myown.grf

I'm not sure. Usually you should be able to replace certain vehicles (IDs) from another set, AFAIK. But i'm not sure if MB put anything in his code which will disable the complete set whenever another set is loaded, or something. (you can try that easily though)

I don´t know how OTTD handles .grfs built for ThePatch but under TTDPatch this is possible and some people have done that to use their own vehicles together w. the DB Set.

However, the latest version of the DB Set uses almost all vehicle IDs and it´s not always secure to use IDs which are already in use because of the internal structure of the set. E.g. you would loose the livery schemes provided by the "wagon override" feature when replacing specific engines.

Anyway, in the DB Set´s donotreadme you´ll find a list of all included vehicles incl. their veh-IDs.

HTH
