Dead easy.....
First...Go get the latest drivers...

THEN....
Simply select the Sounblaster Pro (old) and to DMA 1 IRQ 5 220 Hz

Works for me.....
I have that 1688 on my other machine

Are you referring to the latest real-mode drivers (ie, ES968.COM, ESSCFG.EXE
and ESSVOL.EXE)?

I'm guessing that's as in "My other machine's a P4" or "My other
machine runs Linux" or (better still) "My other machine runs TTD no
problem"

Did you use this advice and did you make it work?

I'm asking because I have the same soundcard, but cannot make it work
(apart from some crackle initially)

I have an ESS AudioDrive 1688 sound card too. With the DOS version, I can
only get sound effects when running under DOS (not Windows), although while
in Windows, the sound effects do actually play, but VERY faintly. Music
works in both situations fine. I set up TTD to use SB Pro.

I think... if when you load the game it says something from
"Rational Technologies", it's the DOS version. I don't think
the WIN version uses that technology since it utilizes
DirectX.

Which brings us to another question - does the version of
DirectX affect TTD Windows Ver. 's performance? In other
words, Will DirectX 8.1 make TTD speedier than DirectX 6, or
otherwise?

The title screen of the Windows version has a logo of "Fisk UK", with a
little fish at the bottom centre of the screen. The DOS version has no
such logo. (That company is the one that did the conversion.)

Does your version have an option to run the game in a window (not
full-screen) ?

If yes - it's the windows version
If no - it's the DOS version

IMHO, the graphics look much better in the windows version. Other than
that, I don't think there's much difference.

Thanks. In that case I think have the DOS version (never noticed any
FISK).

I retrieved the latest ESS688 driver, but to no avail. I recognise the
pattern whereby I can hear very faint sound effect when running under
win95, but even if I start up in the old DOS, there are no clear
soundeffects.

The game itself can start from DOS btw, but not the installationfile
(which initialises sound). It hangs when I try to run it. Really
annoying.

Type SET at the DOS prompt (from DOS, not Windows). Do you see a BLASTER
line? If not, type the following at the DOS prompt:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4

Depending on your configuration, the I5 may need to be I7, and some other
values may need to be adjusted.

BTW, is ESSCFG.EXE started from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file?

Thanks. I was about to fiddle this today when I discovered that now
soundfx do actually work from DOS. I changed nothing, but now it
works! WTF?

I have no problems with sound in any other program so I don't think
it's my soundcard or a loose connection of some kind.

It reminds me of this old joke ("If cars were like software"):

Three men are driving in this car. It's an engineer, a lawyer and a
softwareconsultant from Microsoft.

After some time, the cars' engine suddenly stops. All atempts to get
it started, fails.

The engineer says: "it's probably the carburator that needs to be
adjusted 2.23n. If we do that, I'm sure it'll start again.".

The lawyer says:"It's without any question the manufacturers fault.
I'll just call him and tell him to fly in a new car right away or I'll
sue his socks off".

The Microsoft consultant says "Well, how about if we all get out of
the car and then get in again. That usually works, allthough I have no
idea why".

Odd, but ah well. Glad it's working. :-)
I have no problems with sound in any other program so I don't think
it's my soundcard or a loose connection of some kind.
I recently had an oppurtunity to upgrade my ESS AudioDrive 1688 to a new PCI
sound card, but decided against it, as my AudioDrive works with just about
anything I throw at it (Win 3.1, 9x, XP, DOS apps, Linux, etc), I know
exactly what type it is, and every works fine.
The Microsoft consultant says "Well, how about if we all get out of
the car and then get in again. That usually works, allthough I have no
idea why".
Heh...
