Trains doing as they please (2.0.1 Alpha 45)

Post by GFORCE100 »

Hello everyone,

Using patch version 2.0.1 Alpha 45 (March 3rd 2005).

I believe this to either be a bug or I'm doing something wrong (such as settings in the .cfg file). Either way let me explain.

- Trains will sometimes attempt to go onto a lane that another train has already occupied or has chosen to occupy very shortly. This happens on signal junctions as can be seen in my save game.

- Trains sometimes get confused how to get to their station if two stations are next to each other. In my save game please look at the Edinburgh stations and you should see train(s) moving on the Edinburgh South station from depot to depot instead of going to the Edinburgh East station found to its right. The trains going to the latter should not even need to use the tracks leading do Edinburgh South because they don't connect the two stations.

Can anyone shed some light on what's going wrong? I have a thick track backbone throughout most of Scotland so I wouldn't say the track is confusing to understand.

I include the config file and save game.

Thanks in advance.

Here's a screenshot.

You can't see the trains now but in short. Sometimes a train that is destined to goto Berwick station (to the right) goes to the Edinburgh South station. It stays there for a while going in and out of the depots changing lane in the station if and when the signals allow it (dpending on other trains coming into the stations etc.).

What could be causing this? Is it a setting in my CFG file or is it a bug within the patch?

Thanks

Let me guess, you've started playing with Transport Tycoon (the original)?

The kinds of networks you build in TTO don't really work well in TTD, because two-way signals now have a slightly different meaning. If a train encounters a two-way signal, it means "take any two-way signal, they're all the same". So you need to build your networks with one-way signals to make sure the trains get where they need to go.

Thanks for your response.

No I started playing with TTDX right from the start.

Hmm by one way signals are you implying I go from 2 lights on a given track lane do just 1?

It's odd how elsewhere in the map I don't have such problems and as the save game shows I cover scotland from south to north pretty much.

Yes. Just keep building signals on the same tile until the right light(s) appear. Trains will never go past a "one-way" (single-light) signal if the light is facing away from them, hence the name.
Note, however, that one-way and two-way signals have entirely different meanings. At a set of one-way signals, the train will look at all of them, and pick the "best" one, regardless of whether it's red or green. At two-way signals, the train will look at all of them and pick the "best" one that shows green.

More precisely, the pathfinder does not consider red two-way signals to be potential paths.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.
