Lol yeah I saw this as well. Pretty crazy. Although I think it is possible IRL for a locomotive to go as fast forward as backwards, so it might have been deliberate?
Yeah, locomotives can run the same speed either way in most cases. On a diesel or electric loco, an electric motor runs the wheels, and doesn't care which way it is turning the wheels. On a steam loco, it just changes the location of the drive arm when the steam pushes. The only reason that it seems strange is because most of us are used to automobiles, which are restricted by a gearbox with only one gear for reverse but several for forward.
To build a reversed train, you'll need to build the locomotive first, without any wagons. Place the locomotive on a track and order it to reverse, then add wagons. now the front of the train will be the back and the other way around. I was missing this option in TTD! Lovely you can do it in Locomotion. Have fun!
Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a way to do that. I guess it isn't possible, but it would make a cool mod! Somehow if a train consists of only one engine, it has to be on top of the wagons, you cannot drag it down (well, you can, but when you release the mousebutton the engine is on top again). You can however put one engine in front and a second one at the back.
Steve's Locomotion Depot had that tip early in the days of the demo, i believe. it's a neat little feature. aloows you to make some different looking trains.

Some trains, such as early DMUs and small shunting locomotives, have mechanical gears like a car, but they generally have a seperate reversing gear, thus allowing all gears to be used in either direction.
You can always play TRS2004 - the AI in that loves driving trains backwards, it's quite disconcerting seeing 50 container wagons go rocketing past, and THEN seeing the 87 pushing them. How the hell can he see where he's going?
"(Locomotion is) one of the best-playing games of its type." -Chris Sawyer
Most trains can go either side, some locos have cabins on both sides so there isn't much difference between the sides anyways. However with steam locos going backwards was only allowed with limited speed because the engineer couldn't see where he was going very well because of the tender. Some locos with a tender build in were allowed to go faster backwards because they had a better view backwards. Allthough if you compare it with today even the view to the front of most steam locos was very limited.
Today in The Netherlands locos are never turned around anymore, so un dual heads you quite often see some locos going forward, en some going backwards. I don't know about other countries for sure but I wouldn't expect much turning nowadays.

i'd like to see that
Trains don't turn around when there is an engine on both ends of the consist. So all you have to do is make an engine that looks like a normal passenger cariage, but make it an engine to the game (set variable) Tada: engine pushing from the back.
If you don't want to make an engine version of every single wagon in the game, you could make a braking van or something.
Although it would be a very simple thing to accomplish, no graphic editging is needed at all. I think I'll look into it right now.
I heard the stories that they tell of how they labored for this company which sold it's soul to hell
Cabforward locomotives were designed to run backwards, wouldn't it be cool if we reversed it again?
Yeah, it'll be a cool idea to make a brake van so that we wouldn't have to replace all the wagons?
A caboose would also work fine, but we're somehow going off-topic here
Move over to this topic instead http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?p=204326
as you can see.. they dont *magiccally flip around* but they act as if they are *multiple units* or whatever
