Purno's Graphics Site [development paused: need PHP-coder]

Post by Purno »

You can get lots of hits on a single website, with a big link in your sig.
Okay, I've thought about this. This could be useful. But I don't have any experience with website stuff (except for HTML). So I probably need some help with getting some stuff online.

I've made a setup of how such website could look like. Take a look at the attached zip file.

Do you know that Dinges has a TTDgraphics site? Hmm, you do since you voted for my European Roadset. Ask him to host your files!

Dinges has said before that I could post some graphics at his site, but his site is (IMO) only for GRFs. And I've only released 1 GRF. The rest are only PNG drawings (the sprites itself).

What do you want to post your images for then? So other people can contact you and ask if they can write an NFO to them? If they right-click the image they can download and start editing them without asking you.

So people have a better overview of the graphics I've done. I currently have a topic on this forum with a complete list, (I don't know if anyone uses it  ) but that contains only links (and no direct images). Besides that the list is getting long and unclear.

The same can be done now, with the topic on this forum. They just click a link and save the picture.

But I'm not like MB. I don't mind if people use my graphics. I always like it when people code my graphics. Besides that, if people want to draw sprites and they can't draw from scratch (like me in the beginning), they can edit mine. (Since MB's are copyrighted). IMO we're all here to improve TTD(Patch), so why making it each other harder with copyrights? That doesn't mean that you can edit/code my graphics without asking. I would like to know if people use my graphics. This because I want the GRFs to be released to the public and I want to have an overview of all my graphics and the available GRFs.

I thought a website like in the zipfile would make it easier for some people. But actually I don't know how many people are using the topic on the forum, I edit now when I've made a new graphic.

In short the question is: Is such a website, as in the zipfile, useful?

I think Dinges should enhance his website, a PCX-needs-NFO section

But I also think if someone draws so much graphics, he needs such a website like you (Purno) want. I checked it out, and it's really cool (even if it don't works at the moment ). The best is, if you do it dynamically with PHP: a script reads a tree structure with countries, each with a flag.png inside, and displays it as a list. In the country folder are folders with vehicles, each containing a data.txt, preview.png, sprite.png and original.jpg - the preview pictures will be displayed in a list (but then they need a smaller format) together with the folder (train) names. A click on that parses data.txt, prints the technical data, shows the original picture, the sprite, and a preview picture.

It sounds like a fun project, but I'll be gone for three weeks in about 12 hours...

Oh well... I also like challenges :P

Oh BTW Saskia; you could also make a database format for that, much easier to get overviews and things like that...

@Bart: I already did that, but there's one problem: MySQL doesn't accept my query that changes the datasets. I can't find the error, if use that query with PHPmyAdmin, it does work. But except that, the script is ready-to-use:
It shows you a combo-box where you can select train sets. On the next page, a complete table with all technical data is shown, and for every vehicle, you can add as-many-as-you-want links or pictures with optional descriptions. The admin area is protected by .htaccess, and shows a list with only a few data for the vehicles. If you click on a vehicle, you can change all data (there's the SQL problem). You can assign the vehicle to every train set, that is available on this server. Fresh empty datasets can be added with a link on the bottom of the admin list. :)

I'm with Saskia. Purno, having your own website that showcases your work is a fine idea, but also, Dinges should add a "need-to-be-coded" section to his graphics website. But he hasn't been around much lately, so I don't know if he's reading this.

if you want, I might be able to help

I can write PHP+MySql.

I can make a *file uploading* thing, in which you can select what directory it should go to, and emiddiatly add a line in the DB where it sets the image locations, so that on the nromal site, you would get a treet and stuff, which will be read out of the DB, containing like the alfabetical nummers from countrys, and all trains will be under the alfabetical order (or if I can set the right rights, on the server, you will be able to add maps yourself)

all I can do is code, I suck at graphics :)

Should I send you my work so far? Maybe you can enhance it or even find the error in that mysterious *looksfrightened* SQL query

Aw, and it's missing a *file uploading thing*

haha sorry, I havent read this post in ages 8-)

anyway, I can show you a very simple example of a file uploading system:

http://62.163.141.201

It will be offline till tomorrow morgning, around 1000 GMT+1 (amsterdam time thing)

cuz I am going to bed right now.

just take a look tomorrow, I know there are some bugs with the menu, no clue how to fix it, since on the same browser, but different users, it somehow does, or doesnt work

on my friends IE6.0 it works great, but on a GF's IE6.0 it *flips away* when you go over the text

and for me? it works great, even on mozilla, also on my slaptop, IE6.0 + mozilla, all workign fine.

anyway, back 2 topic,

the file-uploading thing also creates a thumb of 100width max, and, if it is higher then the width, it makes it 100height max. (measured in pxls)

it *transforms: * jpg, jpeg and gif to jpg. but png still crashes, cuz I dont have that plugin yet--; i just cant seem to find it --;

aaaanyway, YES THERE ARE BUGS IN IT (except in the fileuploading thing)

-daantje

p.s. did I mension there are bugs? :-o :D

p.s.s. the site stil lhasnt finished, but I cant work on it ATM... school, blegh (*her tentamens :S!*, hogeschool blaat, HBO, saai) (sorry for the dutch)
