Replacement options?

Replacement options?
This may be a stupid question, but is it possible to replace one or two train engines, (loco's), with, for instance, an ICE train?
I'm currently using the DBXL-set but have found that there are too many engines and to few passenger train options - like the ICE available!
When looking at the ones available I can see at least two or three engines that I never use at all - which I would prefer to have replaced by other items. Is this possible at all - or am I stuck with the trains that comes with the DBXL set?

You'll need to code a grf to add trains...
But adding passenger trains to the DBSet is what is going to be done at the DB Passenger Set Project.

Is that a difficult task? Code a grf I mean!Purno wrote:You'll need to code a grf to add trains...

Funny you should reply! I've seen some of your trains in your sig, trains which I certainly would have wanted as replacements for some of the trains included in the DBXL-set.

Yes, only few people are able to code grfs.SAC wrote: Is that a difficult task? Code a grf I mean!

??? Copyright issues? Why would this be a copyright issue?
The problem as I see it is that everyone seems to be working on - and releasing - entire sets, instead of allowing the end user to combine different trains from various sets in an easy and user friendly way. As noted I'm using the DBXL-set, but have found that I'm stuck with a bunch of red train engines which I don't use - or even like - and for that reason would have wanted an option to replace a few of them with trains made by others - for other sets - if only there were single trains or train sets available!

Because the author of the DB set has suffered the fate to which eventually all genii must succumb. Instead of releasing his work under a liberal licence, which would allow the community at large to use it as a learning resource, and improve the product, he's decided to place obstacles in the way of everyone else. As we all know, the true genius ends up completely gone in the headSAC wrote:Copyright issues? Why would this be a copyright issue?

I don't know what he's doing with his new stations, however there will be a more liberal set of new stations available here soon.

Ehh, I see nothing wrong with the DB Set, there is a massive range of locos avaliable, and as long as you are only going for the fastest loco, then there are plenty of THOSE in there too.
I don't know why so many people compain about such modifications, they should go back and play original TT for a while, then play with everything back again... There used to be about 2 locos that carried passengers, now there are so many, and ALL look better then the older ones...
Heck, Michael even went as far as to put in MORE passenger trains, some early electric ones (I am in love with the ET-11 for express services), and the BR111 with S-Bahn coaches specially for the later years...
It's pretty damn good the way it is, and it will be even better when the stations come out, as the current ones look plain silly compared with newer vehicles (and that goes for any new vehicle sets, they all make the original graphics look silly).
Also, if you want to avoid the period of the DB (1991+), then you will have to fiddle around with cht:year, which is not recommended when using the DB Set... :S

Well, my intention is not to complain about anyones particular work. Heck, all the new graphics available were the reason for me to start playing this game again. On the contrary, apart from a few graphics, all the new graphics look astonishing and it's a joy to be able to play TTDLX using them.Raichase wrote:Ehh, I see nothing wrong with the DB Set, there is a massive range of locos avaliable, and as long as you are only going for the fastest loco, then there are plenty of THOSE in there too.

What I am having a hard time understanding are the releases of complete sets - instead of, or should I say also - allowing for the end user to mix and match a bit more with graphics from various sets available!
And I agree Raichase, there are plenty of options available in the DBXL set, but I still believe I finally end up with a bunch of too much red locos which I don't like and don't want to use. For this reason I would have wanted the option to replace some of them with other types of trains. That is not to say that I don't appreciate Michaels work. I do! But as an end user I also want to be the one deciding what graphics to use - even if I have to base it on a set!

the reason they release in full sets is so its like your playing through the history of the country that the set is based on ie. realism.
But i do agree, the DB era of red engines does get a bit annoying. You will like the US set when it comes out, it will have a good mix of different looking locos from the US.

@Lightglobe & SAC, please look here:
You would still have to play DB all the time, but ...

Saskia, dont point it at me. Im happy with the db set. And i already knew about your addition. I will probably get it as well as i agree with you, passenger trains are/were(new dbxl version adds some nice ones) lacking.
But anyway, I still suggest SAC wait for the US set and see what he thinks of that as it will be out very soon(hint at US set developers

Why not release individual trains as individual grfs so that everyone can choose their favourite trains?

And what if you buy multiple locomotives in one train? Could that be easier to code?Akalamanaia wrote:It gets problematic in aspect how ya code the wagon overrides..

Because vehicle IDs are hardcoded. You couldn't have two trains from different sets together if they use the same vehicle ID. So you'd have to make the vehicle ID settable by a newgrf.cfg parameter, and people would have to allocate the IDs manually, and then it gets really messy.Purno wrote:Why not release individual trains as individual grfs so that everyone can choose their favourite trains?
But TTDPatfch doesn't exactly stop you from releasing graphics that way.

...it just wishes you didnt.
Also, if you release individual trains, imagine the amount of files your working with to get a full compliment of trains. Personally, i dont want to have to wade through all that to organise my newgrfw.cfg file.
