When will sets be done?

Post by Darkvater »

Sorry to just rush into this forum as a non-artist, but I am getting pretty curious if/when these sets will be (ever) finished?

Some sets have about 80 pages so far, been going on for months, but still no visible, useable endresult. I understand we are all doing this for our pleasure, but if I may be so blunt: when can we see some finished work?

There are so many, and not a single one of them is finished

I hope the European Cargo Set can release some result ASAP. I hope when we've something we can release it, but I'll have to discuss that with at least Saskia and Colonel32.

The European Cargo Set needs lots of coding, but first the research of which IDs we will use must be finished, I guess.

Besides that, Raven came with the idea to make small sets which can be made very quickly. There isn't such a set started yet, but I hope this will be done very soon. I will make some graphics for such sets. Hopefully there is something to release ASAP.

Hm ... that's like the concept of splitting sets into base/passenger/cargo. Of course I support it then  But instead of having a cargo and passenger set, you could use Raven's "car industry mini-set", for example. Yes, that's good 8)

BTW, I see no problems to release the cargo set partially and add cars time by time [Stück für Stück], once we have decided what cars will be part of the (new) DB base set then - Oracle said, we need a replacement car for every oringinal TTD car.

When they're done, and not before. Of course, if you're that enthusiastic to see them finished, you should be mucking in with some elbow grease ;)

Most of the sets have a percentage in their title to let you know when they will be finished. The US set will be done soon, I think in a couple of weeks. But the debugging has revealed an awful lot of detail that needs to be added, which is being worked on. The Japan set will be out in, I think, two to three months, possibly sooner. The BR set is massive, I fear maybe even larger than the US set, so I don't really know when it will be out. The Planeset is going very slowly, more interest is in the train sets I think. I believe the Dutch set is well along but there's not much information released, likewise the Belgian set. All other sets have a long way to go as far as I know.

I don't like to give percentages, because they should provide an accurate figure. You can not know before a project like this is finished to know how much work was required, therefore you can't give a real percentage. If a project is 50% done oday and 25% done last week, then I should expect it finished in 2 weeks. However, nobody here has enough information to be able to say "this project is 50% complete", since they don't know how much work will be required in total.

This reminds me - Rule 2 for topic names in this forum (see stickies) needs to die. I refuse to put a status tag on my project, and will edit out any that appears there.

Well, you're right that the percentages are only estimates, and if you don't want to put one on yours I can't force you, but I do believe they are helpful. They don't relate to time, though, they relate to effort - if for some reason people slow down their contributions, naturally progress will also slow down. I think the indicator on the US set has been roughly accurate, and also has given people a morale-boosting sense of progress.

Exactly. Percentages are for providing near-accurate figures, not estimates. "50%" means "exactly half", not "roughly half". It's probably better to use language more suggestive of an estimate, e.g. "about half-done". If a set is, e.g. "95% done", it suggests to me that only 5% of the work is left, which would take approximately 5% of the total time to complete. If you've got your activities right, something which is 10% of the work should require 10% of the time and effort. If it requires more than 10%, then it's clearly more than 10% of the job ;)

So, given that the US set is 95% complete, and has been going for some 121 days (count if you like), I guess it'll be done and finished within a week, right? I'll just get the runway ready for the pigs ;)

OK, I'll go and change it to saying "+/- 95% done." Sheesh.... :?

Well, I guess the bottom line is, it's a free Internet. If I want to put a percentage-complete in my project, and you don't like it, well, tough. But I can't make you put on in yours if you don't want to. And that's as it should be.

 How about a useless discussion?? You can't possibly assume that these figures (%) are actually being calculated, do you?! It's a guess, it says nothing, and besides; it should have been, 'when it's done'...
