Well in the Alpha there's bigger problems with the steam tug - it disappears once loading commences ;) Not complaining though as the set is a great development for those who start with early games :D

Is it possible to combine two or three types of cargo in a ship, the same way as done in aircrafts?

Hurtigruten is the Norwegian Coastal Express, running from Bergen to Kirkenes, calling several small ports and all main cities on its way. It was for a long time the most important link with passengers, mail and goods to several small and remote places along the coast. A roundtrip takes about 13 days (in winter time, in the summer it calls a few extra scenery places and extends the voyage time). In all it calls 34 ports (winter time)

Suggested OTTD Stats:
Availability: 1956 - 2000
Passengers: 75
Mail: 12
Goods: 50
Refittable to all except liquid cargoes (no oil, fuel, plastic, water, etc)
Price: Similar to a passenger vessel of same size
Running cost: slightly more than a passenger vessel of same size (you economize by combining more freights :) )

No :)

Nice ships, they're similar to the Island Trader in FISH 1 (not needed for FISH 2)

See what you mean

Too bad we couldn't make it a Passenger/Mail/Goods vessel as the Hurtigruten ships are……

Knowing the global shipping industry, they probably already carry passengers

What about proper box ships? This is Emma Mærsk, one of the largest box ships in the world, it is almost 15000 TEU capacity (14770TEU according to Wikipedia), service speed is 25.5kts, almost 50km/h. For those of you who don't know, TEU is the normal size container frequently seen on trucks and rail-cars

Box ships have been seen since '70's, but the huge giants like this is from the new millennium

Common traits for box ships: high speed, high loading/unloading speed, somewhat high running cost (though they pay back with shorter transit times)

Its a question of scale.
Unlike former ship sets FISH/SQUID focuses on coastal ships (short sea trade) which means sizes up to some 100m in legth. Emma Maersk is well beyond that.

Castle Point Packetsteamer is exactly that, I am not aware that its going to be replaced by another type, so Mk. XXII may look just like that

Issues with large ships are:
- max width is less than one tile. Wider ships glitch with docks, canal banks etc.
- max length is around 2 tiles. Longer ships having issues with flickering graphics, with ships sticking out of depots, and with graphics significantly overlapping land tiles.
- a capacity of tens- or hundreds- of thousands of tons in the game is pointless. OpenTTD does not generate cargo in these volumes except in the most extreme games.

With a 1x2 tile restriction in length, it sound like we are restricting ourself to PANAMAX (ey, the locks in Panama canal is that size :D ;) )

That's fixed and will be in next alpha release :)

Or get the grf from the compile farm here http://bundles.openttdcoop.org/fish/push/LATEST/
Cool, thanks for the quick fix!

Seems to me that Squid Ate FISH introduces a bunch of motor vessels (steam and diesel) in 1870, but have nothing prior to this. Wouldn't it be an idea to spread out a little more the introduction of vessels, i.e. start with a few low capacity steam vessel somewhat earlier, introduce a few more steamers (mainly paddle steamers) the next couple of decades, before introducing the first diesel vessels, etc. Without checking too much out the historical bits, but paddle steamers was introduced a good deal before the propeller was patented. Also steam vessels continued to be introduced for some time after diesel engines was available (technical challenges, market interest, etc.)

I have guessed that FISH is not interested in increasing with sailing ships (though there exist a sailing ship NewGRF), so requesting pre-steam vessels is for another thread...

I've been plotting 'SailFISH' for a couple years now, but other commitments have steered it off course. There are plans for sailing ships, just not 'immediately'

Great, I am loading Sailing Ships 0.62 in order to be able to start in 1750 (first ship as I can find is available from 1700)

If you want some help with researching models, I'll give a hand

looking foreward to that, Dan

There is a number of issues, gamewise (how do they fit in, sizes and such) and graphically (ugly glitches and how to make sails look good?). But I´m confident there will sails, one day.

Two puny attempts of mine ...

Those look good. FWIW, I have avoided sails so far because:
- it's hard to make them look good in a proper TTD style
- some stuff about wind direction we could probably ignore
- I don't play games before 1870, everything is too slow and boring for me :)

I would recommend making a library of standard sails (square, luff, whatever the terms are), and reuse them for all ships. Drawing all the angles for good sails is a big project.

I wouldn't mind providing code for a for SailFISH set (Dan knows this already). But I wouldn't spend much time on game balance and testing - and that's where the hard work is :)

Gone for a bit and magic happens! :D

I installed the Squid alpha and am curerntly testing it, Everything works well so far from what I can tell, save for some interesting color changes on the St Marie tug, but this was mentioned in a previous post I believe. But for the time being I'm thuroughly chuffed to have some proper ships, thanks again, chaps, fantastic! :D

Are there any plans for coding custom sounds and smoke to these? I am still willing to offer sounds for the project. :)
If you can't read this it's because you have no invisible ink de-invisibilizer.
