[OTTD] Cape Town & West Coast Scenario, a work in progress

Post by E C G »

This topic is created to show any progress made on the map making of the Cape scenario.

The scenario is not available yet, and still requires a lot of work, but a heightmap is already available from the scenario post.
Which can be found here: http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=69033

If you have any ideas or recommendations then please let me know.

I have not added trees yet, so the landscape might look rather empty still.
1. Let's start with Cape Town it self. Here is my approach of creating an interesting OTTD representation of the Cape landscape. The Cape biome is dry, but not at all desert. Atleast the desert slopes show sedimental layers and it also stops trees from growing over the mountaintops.

Between Cape Town and Rondebosch you can see a brewery, this is a reference to the old Castle Brewery. Castle is a famous South African beer so it's important that alcohol produced here reaches every big town.

http://www.tt-forums.net/download/file. ... &id=174774
Cape Town as it lays in the City Bowl surrounded by Lionshead, Tablemountain and Devil's Peak.
2. Just south of Rondebosch and Newlands lies the wine region of Constantia. This is part of the Cape Peninsula and allows access to the small fishermens city of Houtbay. Here you can see the "vine yards" that produce some of famous Constantia wines.

The workers of the vine yards live in the shacks at the Constantia T section.

http://www.tt-forums.net/download/file. ... &id=174775
One of the oldest wine regions lies right on the other side of Tablemountain, Constantia.
3. Here's a preview of the next area I will be working on. All the locations have been placed on the map and now I will begin to add desert tiles and rivers. Then I route my way to the town areas. And last I can add the actual town. I do this because I want to make sure the roads will connect properly as towns grow. Finally I can add industries based on historic information.

In the left of the map you can see some of the Cape Flats townships, such as Khayelitsha, Delft and Kuilsriver. The people living in these dry dusty shack towns work in cities such as Somerset Wes and Strand but also in Bellville and sometimes even Cape Town. In the map they have to travel to work by mini-bus, but there's definitely a demand for "metrorail".

Thanks for reading, more updates in the weekend.

keep on :)

i'd raise table mountain, so you can have the streets from northern capetown to be higher. and you could flatten table mountain ^^

already love the first shots, been there 3 weeks ago

@ Kevo00: I like that idea! Bob's British Roadvehicle set is in the scenario so it is definitely an option!

@ Phreeze: I know what you mean, it would make more sense to be higher. For now I am keeping to the realistic heightmap tho, since raising the level of the mountain automatically takes away ground it and so has all kinds of implications, unfortunately.
Would be nice to have a NewObjects of the Tablemountain, Lionshead, Devil's Peak..!

Thank you for the feedback! Keep it coming!

Now as for the update, I planned on posting some more screen shots of the progress last weekend.
However I have been very busy with my thesis and then got struck by some fever... Today I managed to put a few hours in tho, and here is the result:

The Industrial Cape:
4. Here is the latest layout of Cape Town and it's industrial areas. The area from Woodstock, Saltriver to Epping is one of the oldest industrial areas, just outside the historic centre of Cape Town. All the resources grown or gathered in the larger Cape province would be transported to Cape Town where it would manufactured before it would be exported from the Cape Town harbor. The first industries to be built here were focused on grain and timber, but later (in 1902, the scenario start date) there are also chemical and metal related industries.

South of the industrial area grew the Southern Suburbs, for those that prefer living outside the big busy city. The biggest two of the Southern Suburbs are Rondebosch and Newlands. Here the City of Cape Town has already created a land reserve for the future passenger rail line. The rail line would connect the centre of Cape Town with Rondebosch and Newlands as well as Wynberg, Retreat, Muizenberg, Fishhoek and Simon's Town.

Not visible here is the Oil refinery which lies just north of Epping, near the coastal town of Milnerton. Out of the Cape, far into the Atlantic lies an oilfield which supplies the Cape with crude oil.

http://www.tt-forums.net/download/file. ... &id=174933
Cape Town industries and the Southern Suburbs
5. Further to the east of Saltriver and Epping are the Northern Suburbs, with the two towns Parow and Bellville and the townships Lanka and Delft. Parow and Bellville themself are highly industrial and towns with a lot more working class families then Cape Town and the Southern Suburbs.

Just outside Parow and Bellville are the two industrial areas; Epping Industrial and Parow Industrial. Epping Industrial has metal, chemical and timber industries whilst Parow Industrial focusses on raw resources processing, with a glassworks (for the winebottles) and cementplant.

Also in this screen shot is the airstrip of Matroosfontein which has today grown into Cape Town International Airport.

http://www.tt-forums.net/download/file. ... &id=174934
Northern Suburbs and industries
6. North of the Cape Peninsula, on the West Coast lies the harbor town of Saldanha Bay. This is another industrial hub of metal fabrication, powered by the Saldanha Bay Steel Mill, which is provided by the iron ore mined in the North Cape.

Above Saldanha Bay lies the town of Vredenburg where a stockyard processes the local mutton and a machine shop provides the farms with tools and machinery.

http://www.tt-forums.net/download/file. ... &id=174935
Saldanha Bay and Vredenburg
Regarding this scenario's industries... As can be seen, I work with the basic FIRS Economy. This means there are a lot of different industries to work with. I understand there are those who find it overwhelming and find the different production-lines too complex. I can completely understand this opinion and thus in this scenario I offer the following solution, which is industrial clusterings. For example: Saldanha Bay produces Metal and needs Chemicals. Cape Town produces Chemicals and needs Metal. From there on the rest of the industries produce either goods or supplies, which should be sent to surrounding industries or farms.

To further explain the Industry Clusters I will be creating some tutorial maps in the Scenario Topic.

The Cape Winelands: Part 1.
7. Spier Wine Estate is one of the many famous winefarms in the Cape. Here grapes are grown and Spier wines are produced. As many big winefarms, Spier also doubles as a hotel, restaurant and (tourist)shops. In OTTD this is translated into a small Estate Town. Here the farmworkers live, but this also the destination for people living in surrounding townships, working on the farm.

The Spier Wine Estate lies next to Eerste Rivier, or First River, the first big river outside of the Cape Peninsula. The river originates in a valley east of Stellenbosch, runs past Spier is joined by Kuilsrivier and then mouths into the big False Bay.

8. The famous university town of Stellenbosch. Internationally known for it's surrounding winelands. Sent the locally produces fruits to the Stellenbosch brewery (don't forget the glass) and export it to Cape Town.

Stellenbosch is named after the Cape Mayor Simon van der Stel, who ordered the founding of a new town to house the many people settling in the Cape. Simonsberg is also named after him, a mountain laying near Stellenbosch.

9. In this overview of the southern end of the winelands you can see how Stellenbosch connects to Somerset Wes and Strand. Also visible are the (rather overgrown) Hottentot Mountainranges. I am still working on a way to keep them visible but also not making them completely dessert.

Next update I plan to show Part 2 of the Cape Winelands; Paarl and Franschhoek

Thanks for watching! :D

Re: [OTTD] Cape Town & West Coast Scenario, a work in progre

Post by E C G »

Hello again! After a busy busy week I decided it was time to make another post on the development of the Western Cape Campaign.

I have been really busy on landscaping, realistic town industry and infrastructure placement and have finished work on some big parts of the Cape Town surroundings. Still I hadn't found time to make some screenshots and give a little write-up on them. Ofcourse I really want to go the scenario out as soon as possible, but I really want to deliver a proper presentation on the Cape, so it has to take some time.

Hopefully tho, these screenshots will entertain you and keep you interested in connecting the Cape.

This post is dedicated to the Part 2 of the Cape Winelands. As I wrote in my last post, this will be Paarl and Franschhoek.
10. After Stellenbosch the towns of Paarl and Franschhoek are highly associated with the Cape Wine industry. In this screen shot you can see the town of Paarl, or Die Paarl as it's called by locals. Lying in between the Paarlberg and the Bergrivier the town has a good supply of water for irrigation and slopes for the wineproduction. However, since it's a crossroad between the farming towns further inland and the big city of Capetown, Paarl has grown out to be a bit more then just a few winefarms. Livestock from the Bree- and Dwarsrivier valley is transported to the Abatoir in the south of Paarl from where it will be sent to the bigger towns.
http://www.tt-forums.net/download/file. ... &id=175373
11. The Bergrivier is a large lifeline for the farmlands of the Cape. It passes through Paarl and runs down to Piketberg in the West Coast before it mouths into the Atlantic at Velddrif, near Vredenburg. It originates in the mountains around the valley of Franschhoek, where the water is collected in the big Berg River Dam to supply the irrigation of many local (wine)farms. The name Franschhoek means French Corner, since this was the location many French Hugenots settled after they fled to Holland from France somewhere around 1700. The French brought with them the viniculture and thus you can find many wine farms around Franschhoek all the way to Stellenbosch, Wellington and even further inland.
http://www.tt-forums.net/download/file. ... &id=175375
12. Here an overview of the Cape Winelands in the Hottentot Holland Mountains. Apart from the wine farms and even some wine estates there's also other food to be transported down to Cape Town. The distances are quite large tho and as one can see in the history of the Cape Railways, there used to be a lot of railtrack covering the Western Province. Now a days there's little of track left, since transport is now done with trucks. It will be interesting to see the track design in OTTD and how it would compares to historic routes, since one can play by geographic and industrial rules.

Next I'd like to show a bit more of the work that's been going on regarding the mountain and river landscaping.

As you can see at the start of this topic, I started out with the design of Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula. From there on I work my way out into the Winelands of Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch aswell as the Farmlands of Swartland with it's capital Malmesbury.

The Winelands have a very mountainous landscape and design of the mountains takes some dedication, atleast by my standards. But then it is quite easy to place the towns and rivers, since the geography of the map is very easy to orientate on and relate to googlemaps.

The very flat Farmlands however are difficult to navigate and so it takes a lot of time to place rivers, infrastructure, towns. But once that's done, it's easy to place desert and industry.

The different types of landscape make the map very fun to work in, since different design techniques are required even tho there is limited possibilities to differentiate in design. I hope this scenario will be realistic and challenging and at the same time full of eyecandy and some familiarities for people that know the Cape.
13. Moving on the from Winelands we go into the big valleys behind the first line of mountains. Here we have one very big valley named after the Bree Rivier that runs through. One of the ways into the Bree Rivier Vlei (or valley) starts at Paarl. There days one will drive through a tunnel, but before that it was only a mountain pass.
http://www.tt-forums.net/download/file. ... &id=175377
14. The road follows the river canyon all the way down to the Bree River Vlei, where it's met by a small town. Rawsonville could've probably been a sleep-over town for people that were taking the long mountain pass. With these days fast traffic it doesn't see many visitors anymore.
I will probably add a farm or two to this area just to cheer it up a bit.
http://www.tt-forums.net/download/file. ... &id=175378
15. As you can see, the landscape it still unfinished. But atleast the Bree Rivier is in, as is the big water reservoir for the valley. Worcester is a big town in the Western Cape, it even has an airport so some travelers can easily traverse all the mountains. There will be a lot of farms in the valley, a combination of weath, fibers and livestock. These goods will all need to be taken to Cape Town and it might be difficult to run a lot of traffic through the one little canyon...
