Tell us about yourself
In light of the recent topic re: privacy and how much you care to divulge, I thought maybe it would be time to resurrect that classic forum topic - the chance for everyone to sound off about themselves.
Not an introduction as such, just tell us all that you're willing to about your existence.

Re: Tell us about yourself
You sure you want me to open this can of worms Dave?
Me, well, my name is Robert Palfrey. Born in the July of 1987. I have two children, Tom and Max, whom I currently have no contact with for complex reasons. Certainly wish I could see them. My marriage just ended, again, complex and you can read about that elsewhere on the forum if you wish. Won't clog up this post with stuff on that.
I'm English, lived abroad in the US for a time. My hobbies are modding computer games and 1st World War re-enactment. More of a dog person than a cat person, but I love all animals really. I'm a very old fashioned person, partially down to having been essentially raised by my grandparents. Most of my views on things are probably very outmoded, but, it's me and I can't help how I feel. Political view wise, I am a Monarchist and I think Democracy just results in a lot of people squabbling and nothing getting done. Child of a military family, but I can't serve due to health issues, to which a feel a bit of a disappointment to my family whether they actually feel that way or not. I'm a Type I Diabetic and Autistic. Casual drinker, mainly cider and wine. I have smoked in the past but I wouldn't call myself a smoker. Don't gamble sheerly because I think it's a waste of money. I'm a total nerd, and would probably fit in quite well in "The Big Bang Theory". I'd say I was a bit on the sensitive to certain things. I tend to get passionate about things which can lead me into conflict with others, but I don't actively seek to cause trouble. I hate confrontation and i'd rather we all just got along.
Not much else to say really. I like a variety of different music, mainly leaning toward ragtime, jazz, blues etc. Bit of modern stuff in there mainly from my mother, father, the eldest of my siblings (I am the eldest of my generation).

Re: Tell us about yourself
I'm bloody mad. There you go.
I guess most people know me.
I'm Richard, as anyone on Facebook will know.
Born at some point in time I believe. Though possibly not on this planet...
Lived in Stevenage all my life (Huzzah!.. oh god why!)
Interests... Model Rail stuff, Railways and rail-industry related things, photography, gaming, graphics, travelling, aviation, Norway... That's most of it.
Love flying and aircraft... though railways I'm afraid take first place out of the two.
As most will know, I work in the rail industry as platform staff/dispatcher, for a company called something or other. Not going to say who
I had a dream when I was younger... my childhood dream was, and has always been to become a driver. Halfway through a media production degree that i wasn't enjoying... I decided I will follow that dream and become a driver one day
Fascinated by railways, primarily from an engineering and historic prospective. I'm very proud of our railway and their heritage, and thus I am fascinated and possibly obsessed with steam traction and old stuff. Though I will certainly not be classed as a train spotter. no sir. An enthusiast yes... but not a spotter. Partly because I don't jot down numbers... but mainly because there is a huge amount of people from the whole group of rail enthusiasts that I wish not to associate myself with.
I think I'm one of two resident bronies here. Though I only say I am one for the lawls. Simple fan of the show does that.
I'm a ranto-holic, though cutting down. I do love a good rant or moan, occasionally a good well-structured argument. But if the other person is a nonse, I just fall back on taking the absolute mick for my own amusement or that of others.
I've been playing Transport Tycoon since it was on separate floppy discs and played on DOS. And I even knew how to get it booted up on DOS! Not bad for a super-youngster at the time.
I used to travel around a lot, up to Norway in particular. Anyone who knows my history roughly knows why. And that's always where I found my passion for photography. Though only by hobby. I'm self taught with that and I do it for fun. Though I try to do it properly.
I also stick to a set guide or way of doing things. This is especially common when it comes to railway modelling to the point I've spent months designing a Network Southeast Layout with the idea of having prototypical signalling, trackwork, a control panel influenced by signalbox route setting... and even right down to the idea of having CD/RA boxes at the end of each platform. How you model those in OO gauge though... still researching that one.
Elsewhere... I'm a OO gauge project leader for my local model rail club, I play guitar sometimes, I'm a massive fan of Status Quo and classic rock music. Other artists like Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, ACDC, Meat Loaf, etc. And no, I'm not 'too young to know about Status Quo'. Anyone who says that will get slapped. And I mean it!
Working on a few film projects in the past, including a steam and APT documentary which are my most proudest achievements. Not in terms of quality, there is much room for improvement. But in terms of I set myself a target, and said I would do it. And I did. Against quite a lot of scepticism and against a number of odds.
Aaand.. I have a bit of a competitive mindset. If I'm certain I'm right, or know I'm right. I will fight for what I say and for my view. Even on games, I'm a good sport... but I can get very competitive. Either just a fun "rematch!" or I can get very into things and want to win no matter what. Doesn't usually end well the latter.
However, I'm very honest. If I know I'm wrong, and I've been proved wrong I will put my hands up and admit it. Assuming of course I'm convinced by that proof. I think some may have picked that one up before though that I do have that kind of argumentative/competitive mind set
And I also have a strange obsession with cake. Even just the word... cake.
I blame too much playing Portal for that one. Or not enough...?
Can't really think of anything else. I'm not that interesting I guess. But meh. It was a way to waste a good 10-15 minutes of the evening

Re: Tell us about yourself
Hi all, my name is Morgan. I used to be known as Morgsie on here but I lost my details so I created my current profile. I was born in July 1987 and I have a diagnosis of Aspergers and Depression. I am a Politics student who would like a career in Politics. I am Lib Dem and I am interested in Transport (Rail mainly), Health, Education, EU, Constitution etc. I got a good mark on a policy analysis of rail Franchising which included the screw-up last year. I also like playing computer games, I was addicted to TTDLX back in the 1990s and I do like OTTD. My genre's are: Simulation, Tycoon and strategy mainly. I also like reading books both factual and fiction. I like watching TV and films. Recently I was bullied off thestudentroom forums by Administrators and Moderators who treated me like a criminal even though I have done nothing wrong. It still affects me today because I was on it for so long. I am going into my Final Year at University. I have looked at UK, USA and German Politics. I have looked at the EU and the UN. I am not a technical wonk and I get a bit upset when other users say DIY, Hello I am no good. I propose ideas
I normally use UK GRF's which needs more work done I feel. I am upset there is no more of UKRS2 and the proposed Brittrains which is going nowhere, I would like to see Pullman cars, the Brighton Belle, the Blue Pullman, the 395 Javelin, Pacers etc. I would like to see a UKTBRS GRF which would make the Total Bridge renewal Set compatible with UK Roads. I also think the UK Tram Set should be incorporated in BATS.
Feel free to PM me

I'm Nick, and I frequent the Locomotion section, helping in any way that I can.
In real life (at the time of this post) I'm a high school student in the United States. I play the trombone in band, jazz band, marching band, and orchestra, and I play both classical and jazz piano. My music peers envy me because I've been first chair 3 years running and I have absolute/perfect pitch. I've also taught myself a decent amount of rock guitar, which I picked up about 5 years ago.
My parents have been divorced since before I was 1 year of age. I live with my mother and her husband, as well as their child, my half-sister. I visit my father and his wife in addition to their two boys on occasion.
I joined these forums last year because I needed help editing .dat files for Locomotion, which I now provide for any users who need it. I'm an active member of the second Nations Game, portraying a country named after the biggest city near my location, Chicago.
And that's all the government will let me tell you!

Re: Tell us about yourself
I'll fancy a stab at this!
I'm Christopher. I was born in April 1991 in Stockholm, Sweden. There I remained until 2010 when I moved to San Diego for a year abroad. In 2011, I returned to Stockholm but in early 2012, I instead moved from the AWESOME Swedish capital to the city of Örebro (6th biggest in Sweden) for a lady. I now work in Customer Service (mostly with them invoices/bills fo sho) for one of the biggest Swedish telecommunications companies.
I am the oldest of 5 kids (sister born in 1993, brothers in 1996, 2001 and 2003). My paternal grandfather came from Italy which makes me 25% a cheating racist swine. I mean, uh, Italian. I speak Swedish and English at completely fluent levels and I've also studied Spanish for 4 years.
I joined TT-Forums back in December of 2004 just after I had discovered Chris Sawyer's Locomotion. I then got dragged into TTD again, a game I first ventured upon when I was only 4 years old in 1995. After joining in 2004, I was not very active through 2005. Since 2006, with the exception of a 6-month period of shame, I've been an active member of the forums. Earlier this year, I finally managed to get the chance to rule over you as peasants when I was made a Global Moderator.
I'm a big fan of video games, board games, music and sports. This can be seen since I've authored topics such as GTA V and the Formula One Topic

25 and German, although I'm currently living in Munich. Well, it's an experience, anyways. Currently I'm either busy with university or playing (mostly) weird games.
Also, for some reason I created this account back in 2008, but my first post is from 2011. Really wonder what was on my mind in 2008 ...

Hello, my name is *insertyournamehere* … As my nickname tells you. Well, no, not really, my name is, as written on my e-mail, M. Harfan. You won't found me irl, unless you can knock on my door and tell me who am I actually, which then I'd say well done. I'm 15 as written on my profile, which then leads to the year 1998. Born on early 1998, when my host nation got a huge trouble. I haven't moved anywhere. Lived in the borderland of West Java and East Jakarta, just as told on my profile again *sigh, mate*. I currently study at a senior high school, you can find the link on my sig. Not sure what again to say, I read webcomics a lot, study a lot, trying programming when free, and babble in fora a lot. Also a proud moslem at most (which then you all give it an atheist touch, uh oh).
I joined TT-Forums after some veery long consideration (owen, your registration was really scary for a 13 yrs old !), after I had discovered TTD at the end of elementary school, then OpenTTD comes second, it did broke my mom's laptop (shame virus comes with first downloads). Locomotion comes as a last blow, DADT around how I got one. And then my interest in programming also comes from NewGRFs, believe me. So for those who made NML, well done.
That's all ! You can hold that for now !

Sounds like fun.
My name is... well, it's not difficult to find but i won't share that information here. Live in Suffolk, England although am about to start university in York, to study Comp Sci/Maths. (2 weeks!)
TT-F? Well, I'd bothered to upgrade my copy of OpenTTD (0.4.8 -> 0.7.3, iirc) and wondered where the AI had gone. A small amount of googling later, and I became one of the many people asking where the old AI had gone. However, unlike most of them I (for some reason, no idea what
) stuck around and got involved in AI development (see AroAI, link in sig) and consequently moved on to dabbling about in OpenTTD's source codes - me being the one responsible for OTTD now being able to read textfiles (readme, changelog, licence). Well, I pushed the devs into doing it for me, anyway (Not being exactly brilliant at teh codez). Currently, I've joined Alberth as a developer for FreeRCT and am focusing on that, which is much fun

Re: Tell us about yourself
Since you ask so nicely Dave ...
Hello,
I am ChillCore born somewhere in the middle of the '70s of the past century,
Some people call me Daniel, nerd, the one with the long hair, weirdo or aso ...
ChillCore is fine for me, and my preferred way of addressing me, as that is the flag I fly on the netz wherever I go. At least I do when I am not trolling, which happens rarely.
Since whenever I was a child I have been fascinated by everything that had knobs and buttons to mess with, countless times my mom and dad asked me to stop turning the buttons on that very expensive stereo installation my grandfather used to have at his place. I always replied "But I am not breaking it ... look I only do this.", at the same time I had that volume button in my tiny hands again. There are even photos somewhere with one of my family members that capture me in the act of doing that naughty deed while having that sheepish look on my face that I still carry to date.
This fascination for buttons I had (and still have) turned into fascination for screws, so when I was about 8 I just had to open everything that could be unscrewed and not be unscrewed to have a look behind them buttons; the later was a bit harder to make it 1 piece again but that did not stop me.
Really everything from watches to still plugged in TVs and PCs have passed the revue (not when I was 8 mind you).
Music:
The easiest way is to explain what I like less, not so fond of opera although "Shakespeare's Othello performed by Placido Domingo" made me cry in the classroom when I was 10 because the teacher explained what the man was singing as he was performing the masterpiece.
I do not really like commercial music, style boys bands, and the boring stuff artists are forced to perform by the record labels because it sells.
Pretty much everything else goes as long as it swings and strays from what most radio stations play all day long.
Movies:
Science fiction and Horror; the more blood and splatter it has the better the hellraiser series are one of the series I enjoyed most.
Oh and Stephen King ... you can call me any day to sit sown with you and watch one of his movies; my favourite of all times is the Langoliers.
Books:
I love to read too, but I am more into technical books over anything else, I love digging through manuals so that I know what them buttons that still fascinate me exactly do. e.g. Pressing the play button on a DVD-recorder for 5 seconds will unlock its max speed and stuffs like that.
It is rare that I just plug in a device before having read the manual ... only one exception though PCs ...those are plug in and start doing, often I do not even close the case to be able to swap disk quickly and without much fuss.
I remember when I was a kid I seemed to have all the food on my side of the table and when someone dared to take something, of which I was reading the ingredient for the umpteenth time, I would insist they'd hurry up serving themselves so I could continue reading.
Unfulfilled dreams:
I have a few but I am still relatively young, at least in spirit.
I have always wanted to be a fighter pilot (only to fly the bugger, not shoot) and a train driver too but my eye (the other one has 20/20) is not good enough to even make a chance to get through the selections so I have buried those dream along time ago.
One day however I am going to jump out of an air-plane from at least 10.000 meters to experience the joy of flying without mechanical aid (did I mention I am afraid of heights, hehe).
I have been driving a moped from the age of 12, legal in my country from the age of 16 provided you have a driving license because of the speed it was capable of (65 km/h while 40 is the maximum allowed hehe). I had to sneak it out of the house early in the morning. Don't do it kids not in this day and age.
From then on I was hooked on everything that has wheels and I had more then one two-wheeled vehicle over the years, my favourite are the cross models and today I am the proud owner of a Suzuki DR650se which I hope will never leave my possession. If/when it stops running I will empty it of fluids, take it apart , repaint it before putting it back together and it will earn a nice spot in my living room in honer of the joy it has given me.
I did have a few cars amongst others an Opel Tigra that I kinda liked but I never got attached to it despite.
I have never passed that moped exam actually but I do have four drivers licenses in the meantime which allows me to drive that fifth category (the mopeds).
I am allowed to drive reach-trucks, cars, trucks with or without trailer and my favorite, motorised bikes with any kind of piston size.
I do not desire a bus license because I know I would not be able to stand the young adolescent chatter in the back and I would throw them off at some point, that or park the damned thing right there and then.
In short ...
PCs and everything related to it, anything that has wheels, the internet because it allows me to read all and everything I never wanted to know, children and grannies (because they act like children sometimes without being ashamed for it, fighting what is wrong and praising what is right.
That is my life and who I am and if it can be opened it shall be opened is my motto; I do fix my property myself whether it be vehicles, electronic equipment or houses I rent, at least I try before calling for help.
Sometimes I fix stuff for other people too. e.g. I re-did the work of a certified electrician in my dad's house because it did not pass the technical inspection by miles.
If I can make others happy by being who I am and doing what I do then that is all I want from life.
Money does not make me happy at all, it only makes life easier, and believe me I know, I have seen both sides of that story, I have seen relative wealth and have lived extreme poverty too, the times I was most happy was not when I had that money to spend by abundance.
My children is what I live for and nothing else really matters.
I am rather a shy person in real life, not that I feel ugly or have really (visible) physical flaws ... I just do not like wasting time on chitchat and that makes it hard to meet people; not to mention that I am often misunderstood and am tired of explaining myself because people do not seem to follow my train of thoughts, I sometimes feel like we are three in here (me, myself and I) co-processing what I experience; most people seem to live and think slower then me (does that even make sense; at all ?).
I joined these forums almost 5 years ago now and I have not regretted one day of spending here.
I am very grateful for the friendship an respect I receive from this place and you peeps,
Sometimes this place feels too good to be true but it is,
Rock on tt-forums.
Anyway, I think that about sums it up I guess; at least this is what I want to share at this point in time and bundled in one single post.
ps:
Sorry if my post is hard to read in places; my mind has this tendency to go faster then my fingers will.
pps:
Nothing really new in here that I have not shared before and can not be found with a bit of searching, but there you go
I hope you enjoyed the read.

Re: Tell us about yourself
I don't want to tell my name here, but you can easily find my name by just looking around the Internet.
I'm probably younger than most people in this forum. I have an interest in trains and railways, and that led me to this forum.
When I was a few years younger, I had no ideas what trains are like, apart from remembering things on TV/books like having a big old steam engine at the front, because where I was born there were no trains. One day I moved to another country, halfway around the world, much different from where I was born. It was there when I first realized how trains were like. I was puzzled at how it uses electricity for motive power, and also how strange the train looks, as it didn't have a steam engine at the front. When I went inside and sat, the train started moving, and I was amazed at how smooth the ride was. The scenery was beautiful, and I like how the train was moving through the landscape. I instantly fell in love with trains and railways. From then on, I started to collect brochures, tickets etc. of anything related to railways. I even cried in front of my dad so he can buy me an expensive timetable book. I was also interested in high-speed railway, and I even went on a high-speed train, and I just loved the way it slices across the land.
Then after two years I have to move halfway round the world again, and there are no railways here, so that's sad. I went to a boarding school (well technically I'm still in school for one more week), and it was quite fun. I like the people there, both teachers and students. There is a student there who introduced me to this online game about airline management, and it was quite fun. I enjoyed making routes, and buying new airplanes and avoiding bankruptcy, like making a real-life company. Then I start to wonder if there is a game about railway management and making routes etc. I found Railroad Tycoon or whatever on Wikipedia but you have to buy the game and the graphics looks crap. So my hopes were diminished. But I started to recreate railway maps on Google Maps, and I start to make my own fantasy map, such as a highly-unrealistic subway map with 16 lines! But I kept wondering, is there a way to show this with trains and make money out of it? So one day, I was on Google and I typed down something like 'online train simulation' and one of the first links was PlayTTD. Transport Tycoon? What's that, I asked. So I went in and I found exactly what I was looking for. You make stations on the map, and you connect them with rails. My long search is over.
Then I found this forum (but you know how to get there once you know Transport Tycoon).
That's all for now, but if you want more ask me through PM or by a post here.

Re: Tell us about yourself
The name's Chris Jones, I'm 25 and from Wrexham, in North Wales.
Work full time as a trainer for a local firm, ensuring new recruits get all the info they need to do the job, which is a role I particularly enjoy and worked my way into over the course of my employment that started in 2007.
As for interests I enjoy a good drive in my car, and computer gaming, as well as camping and going out to town and getting hammered.

Re: Tell us about yourself
Radek here. I'm 23, born and living in Kraków, Poland. Speaking Polish (a native one), English (which I think I can handle pretty well, but after all you're to judge) and a bit of Russian (just what I managed to learn back in high school, when I picked it as a second language to learn beside English, still enough to survive in the east, where hardly anybody speaks English).
Right now, I'm slowly coming to end of studying Transportation at Cracow University of Technology (just one semester with relatively little classes ahead plus thesis, which I've already started working at). I already have an engineer's degree, now I'm struggling for an MSc (or MEng, it seems like despite the Bologna Process there is still no straightforward translation). When not studying, I'm most likely at work - which is driving trams. I've been in this job for almost three years and I just love it. Shame I'll probably start looking for something better once done with education (I have a decent dream, or ambition, but lets not spoil it - if it comes true, I'll surely boast).
The thing for transportation definitely came to me thanks to my father, who's always been into trams, trains and buses and has even written a couple of books on Krakow's public transport. He was taking me to railfan events when I was a kid, so it purely evolved in me.
As for interests, I'm mostly into railways, photography (generally combined with the former, I shoot with an over 5 years old Nikon D40X, intending to change it for something more advanced, like a D300S, though still other expanses trammel my plans), technology in general (with a moderate interest in gadgets) and retro gaming. What my iPod usually plays is rock classics, bands I respect and value the most are Pink Floyd (I believe The Dark Side of The Moon is the best album ever released), Queen and Led Zeppelin, however there's of course a whole lot more rock music out there that I enjoy. As for still active ones, I like Linkin Park and Coldplay the most.
From time to time, I take part in doing some crazy stuff, like hiring a commuter bus to travel across the country and party aboard, which sometimes includes a little bit of off-road, or going on a "race" with friends, where the goal is to reach a certain destination, do all objectives the teams hand out each other (like finding a particular landmark, a building etc. - all without GPS), without real concern for time, but rather counting the kilometres. Trying to live life to the fullest while I still can
Oh and since I've embarked on cars, the front one is mine. It's 11 years old now, but since it's been maintained well (the former and first owner was my father), I'm not going to change it soon. However, I'll probably buy a motorcycle in Spring.

This is funny, I mean, it's correct to spell it separately like this, but 30% of people still type "nashledanou" and 69% just "nashle"Griff wrote:Na Shledanou
Sorry to nitpick.

Re: Tell us about yourself
This is completely off topic but I imagine nashle is an informal abbreviation which is fine but with regards to the other, spoken Czech it presumably wouldn't matter as the space between na and shledanou would be barely noticeable. Written Czech however, you say it is funny as written like this though correct. What would be the actual proper Czech way of writing it? does it change the meaning in any way with or without the space?Drury wrote:This is funny, I mean, it's correct to spell it separately like this, but 30% of people still type "nashledanou" and 69% just "nashle"Griff wrote:Na Shledanou
