Replace vehicles? (not autorenew)

Post by mageta »

Hi guys,

is there a way in openTTD to replace a batch of vehicles with new ones? I often come to the situation where I want to replace more than one or two vehicles with new ones (steam -> diesel ->..), but currently I do this by ordering all trains to a depot and then replace them by hand, each for each.. In the case of "steam -> diesel" this may be ok but later it's kind of annoying to do this for more than 100 trains.
How do you guys do this?

best regards,
- Ben

Hi. I know this topic is bit old. But I want ask Is possible replace electric locomotive to maglev or monorail? If yes I dont know how :)
I dont wanna old electric machines. I need only new faster maglev :) I send all locomotives to depots, but cannot replace depot if in are locomotives.

Well, the best way to do that is that you send your trains to the depot, upgrade the whole line, sell the trains, upgrade the depot, and then buy the trains again. Hopefully you won't need to assign their orders again.
There has been a lot of discussion on the forums regarding this, have a look if you're interested.

Alternatively, you could use a trainset that doesn't run far into the future (probably the majority of 'realistic' ones), and so doesn't have monorail/maglev  . 'Normal' trains can usually run on even the latest high-speed lines*, so the problem doesn't often arise :P .

Thanks for that auto-replace tutorial! :D
Why can't all games have such a developed UI....
Altho it sounds like a simple conversion method for rail should be the next big project.

there is, it's the "universal railtype" GRF which you can probably find in the online content. if you use that GRF, you can now autoreplace between rail and maglev.

@Jagguar: that's why I created my Progressive Rail Set: to make upgrading from rail engines to monorails and then from monorails to maglevs much easier.

It allows you upgrade like you can from normal rails to electric rails each time. So convert all your rails then then use autoreplace to change all your trains over. :D

I can't believe this has not been fixed yet :D ... The most retarded phase of the game is electric rail -> all the trains to depot -> replace trains -> new orders -> lots of hassle -> same thing with maglev.

By upgrading you are denying yourself the opportunity to do a lot of building new tracks. Higher speeds make that short distances are not that useful to serve, so you can build a new network for longer distances next to your existing network.
In my view, that is a whole lot more fun than just mass-replace everything.

So basically the solution is to remove maglev rails and simply enable maglev trains to run on electrified tracks? Simple to write such NewGRF.
