Amtrak Cascades is getting two new Talgo trainsets

Strange thing to me is that they say Talgo trains were ordered for compatibility reasons with existing trainsets on the line. While this may be true for the coaches itself, as far as I can tell, the engines on the existing sets are different. I don't know the exact type of the existing sets, but it looks like an FP49H or something. So why did they choose to order also the engines from Talgo now?

Only indirectly. The 'deltic' nose was EE's attempt at americanising their locos to make them more attractive for export. FWIW EE's noses typically contained train heating boilers and traction motor coolers, but there's no reason those things can't be behind the cab in the main engine room.

The Irish, they're not ordering 'engines' from Talgo, this is the control car that goes on the back.

all modern European MU's have crumple zones in front yet they don't have a long nose.

The requirements are lower - to run a European MU in North America, it needs to be classified as light rail (example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O-train).

I think it's interesting that some shots of the LEV1 show it having a stunningly similar front end as the train in the original post.

Oregon purchased Talgo trains for these reasons as well as because the state needed to buy the same type equipment that was already in use in the corridor; this way, the new trains can be used in rotation with the existing trainsets providing Cascades service.

All that says is they bought matching trains, nothing about possible matching engines .
