OFFICIAL MANUAL! Problems? Questions? Check the Wiki
Important Notice!
With nothing do since the SVN server box has been hacked, the developers decided it's about time to get to work on one of the most sought after feature of OpenTTD: a manual. Yes, you heard it right :D
For the past few days we have been working hard on setting up a manual using the Wiki system (as has TTDPatch). Some have probably seen the old (Tiki)Wiki, which is now no longer used in favour of the new MediaWiki system.
If you have a problem or question with/about OpenTTD, you should check the Wiki first. It contains nice descriptions of a lot of new features, also applying to TTDPatch users. New content is added daily, so check back every now and then! If you want to help and know EXACTLY how certain features work, go ahead and add them. Please read the 'Layout doc' beforehand to know which style to apply. People writing guides especially for new TT players are always welcome.
So, you can find the manual/wiki at http://wiki.openttd.org
PS. For those who don't know Wiki, it is basically just a website, but one that can be edited online by everyone. For a nice example, try wikipedia.org, which is an encyclopedia built by it's users :-)

The Wiki Manual is now officially open for users. Feel free to register and to edit pages and add new ones. Please read the layout guide before you add a new page, to ensure that all pages have the same look.

You need to register to be able to edit. This involves nothing more than picking a name and a password. No e-mail, etc. etc. are required. This is a good WikiChrisCF wrote:Before I click away, have you enabled anonymous editing, like all good Wikis?

It is much nicer to see by name who changed what so that they can be told so about (if they have given the same name they use here or on irc) what good job they did, or what they should improve.ChrisCF wrote:I'm sorry, but I'm getting sick and tired of sites that require you to register to do anything useful. It's just not funny any more.
I'm sorry, but you've lost one potential doc writer here.
How hard is it coming typing in your name, then a password: '12345' ? and checking 'remember me' ?

No reg would be insecure... Someone could just edit away a good description or explanation and put in a littlle f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** f*** message instead, w/o admins being able to ban himChrisCF wrote:I'm sorry, but I'm getting sick and tired of sites that require you to register to do anything useful. Alcohol is not the answer, it just makes you forget the question.
That's better
I made my two first "wikiings":
http://wiki.openttd.org/index.php/To_Do#To_Do_Page - Added "Red links" part
http://wiki.openttd.org/index.php/Crossing_tunnels - The whole thing

Zetor, we thank you for your wiki contribution, but please have a look at the layout documentation before adding a page to the patches section: http://wiki.openttd.org/index.php/Layout_DocZetor2003 wrote:That's better

Newb here!
2 things;
1. A link to the wiki from somewhere more accesable than the forums might be nice
2. Fix up the newbies section and the instalation FAQ in the wiki. They seem to be empty....
Basically having looked all through the sourceforge site, home page, rifling through the forums, finding the wiki and going through that, I still have no idea how to install and what all those files in the download section do.

Oh god.
Go to http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=253065 and download the version for your system - you can see by the file extensions which type is compatible with your system, and by the name of the file.
Do whatever you would with other files like that on your system to install them. If you are running Windows it will ask you for the TTD CD to get the data files from. If you aren't running Windows you need to copy the data directory, the gm directory and the sample.cat file from an existing TTD installation to your OTTD installation. Then you just run the executable and it will work if you followed the instructions correctly.

Question: does this version of MediaWiki support Categories like Wikipedia does? That might work WONDERS for organization here (it seems to me there really needs to be a wiki maintainer to clean everything up and make it extremely presentable and standardized, like Wikipedia is. I'll be up for the job, seeing how I'm too lazy to actually do any coding right now...)
We'd be delighted to have a wiki maintainer. Most of us are too busy coding to really have time to organize the wiki
