SBB Railways - Gotthard tunnel to remain closed for months

On August 16, 2023 a freight train traveling through the $12 billion Gotthard tunnel derailed, causing a massive amount of damage to the tracks and infrastructure. Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) said that it will take months to repair the damage.

An update from Thursday stated that a temporary rail line is in place and traffic is now running through the tunnel at a reduced rate while other freight trains are being re-routed through a passenger tourist line. Closures will continue until at least October as work continues.
